how many miles for 1st oil change?
Wondering when would be a good time to change the oil for the first time in my '05CTD. I know the manual says something like 7500 miles, but that seems too long to me. Post the mileage at your first change and every interval afterwards. I'm used to changing oil after 600 miles in my bikes and gas motor cars.

CTD's can easily go about 7500 miles between oil changes. My 01 got an oil change when i bought it in July and I put almost 8000 on it and am finally getting around to changing the oil in it.

I did mine at 5000. I change the oil and filter every 5000 using Shell Rotella T and Fleetguard Stratapore filter.
5000 just seems like a good round number. Not very burdensome to do it at that interval, but well within DC's specs too.

I did the first oil change last week at 2500 miles. The next one will be at 7500 and then every 7500 thereafter. The drain plug was literally hand tight (should be 37 ft-#) and I had to use a 1/2" ratchet to remove the filter!

Did my first oil change at 800km, second at 5000km and third at 12,000km, changing every 12,000km after that. I also did all my drive train fluids at 8000km. I would have done the drivetrain sooner, but I wanted to wait until I got some towing miles in.

My first change was at 7500 miles, per the service manual. An oil sample was sent in for analysis, which found that the oil had plenty of life left in it. I changed it regardless, to get break-in material out of the engine.
Next change was another 7500 mile interval (at 15,000 mi odo). A second oil analysis was done, which found that the oil was still like new and that the oil change wasn't even necessary. The laboratory suggested following DC's "Schedule B" plan of 15,000 mile oil intervals.
From this interval on, all my oil changes will be every 15,000 miles. I will continue to sample for analysis periodically to ensure that it still looks okay.
My first oil change was with Valvoline Premium Blue. My second change was with Chevron Delo 400. The laboratory found no significant performance difference between the various oil brands. My truck runs unloaded or lightly loaded most of the time, with some towing of a ~7000lb travel trailer about once per month.

My factory engine oil was changed at 2303 km/1431 miles, but I would have liked to have done the initial change at 500 miles if it would have been practical for me. I am a firm believer in draining the factory oil out hot with as much metal particles from the manufacturing machining process as possible. When I drained the factory engine oil there was no magnet in the oil pan drain plug. When I emptied the drain pan there were a few metal slivers visible in the remaining oil film on the pan's oily surface. I am replacing the factory 15W-40 petroleum engine oil with 10W-30 petroleum engine oil to continue the break-in duration. At the same mileage I drained the gear lube from the differentials and the fluid from the manual transmission and transfer case. The G56 tranny was the only drive train component to have a magnetic drain plug. There were metal slivers in the drained diff lube oil and also in the transfer case drained fluid. The differential lube oil looked like it had a high percentage of water in the drained lube. I do anticipate changing lubricants to save myself future break downs. I really do not fully trust factory workers, nor do I trust dealership personnel. If I could watch them work on my vehicle I may trust them.
