Are you saying that different oil will change the sound?

My truck especially the power steering pump and alternator hate the start up part especially when its -40*F or colder like I've had the last couple of nights here at work. My buddy has a Toyota Sequoia that whines just as loud as my truck when its that cold out. Every other Cummins I've owned sounded that same way so I think it is normal...

P.S. This is with 0W40 synthetic oil, and the rest of the truck is louder and the ride quality is a lot worse.

This is square wheel weather. You should hop in my mustang, it's like riding a goat (not that I've ever actually ridden a goat ) until you round out the tires again.

You really see the extra load from cold in that car. Steering wheel is tight, tranny whines, feels like the p-brake is on when you shift. Makes you appreciate how much that big black Dodge is working extra.

It doesn't really get all the cold here in North Texas......20s maybe. But I can tell a huge difference in the way my truck starts up going from 15w40 Rotella to 5w40 Synthetic Rotella. Cranks and runs very smooth. Might be a different story at 20 below though.....

Surely it can't get that cold in Stony Plain...

At those temps you may want to switch your power steering fluid to Amsoil AFT+4 as it has a pour point of -63 F below zero. With a pour point of -63 F below zero, I'm guess its flow point should be around -40 F below zero and that should make your power steering pump happy.

D-Roc,
It sure does in Ft. McMurray where I work. So cold that the plant where I work has issues staying running with freezing instrumentation and such. The mine also has major issues in supply the bitumen to the upgrader.
