seems the front and rear clutch packs are smokes and cracked., the OD pack is burnt., the input shaft is blued, etc., they say they can not rebuild it.,
sounds like the typical trans fluid cooler problem to me. get them to flow check the cooler.

First time poster so be easy on me.. BUT...

This sounds like a pump problem or maybe a pinched cooler...

I have a 05 3500 with the 48E and pull a 40' racecar trailer with no problems. (22,000 lbs loaded) Truck now has 28,000 miles on it (in 6 months) and the fluid looks perfect. One thing I do suggest is using Royal Purples synthetic tranny fluid. I know the DC guys say it doesn’t meet there specs, but I have a feeling it’s probably because it’s TOO good.

Also while im at it, thanks for all the helpful info.. I love this place.

When you start into a hill while in overdrive or 4th if you cant pull 4th and you just keep pushing on throttle untill it downshifts to 3rd,- 3 things happen . #1 trans comes out of torque converter lockup,#2 trans then shifts from 4th to 3rd gear, then #3 (and the trans killer) the torque converter tryes to lockup again . For the torque converter clutches to relock in 3rd they must pull the engine rpm down, but you have the throttle down putting all that cummins torque on the strength of the clutches. These converter cluches are just like a clutch in a stick shift. And what you just did would be like pulling a hill with a stick shift in 4th ,cant pull the hill so you push the clutch in ,shift to 3rd and let the clutch out all real fast , never letting up un throttle. It burnes the clutches in the converter. when that happens then the disintergrating clutch parts flow through the rest of trans. causeing major repares.
Best to downshift before you get to hill by pushing your little button, easing off throttle let downshift take place, let 3rd gear torque converter lockup take place then throttle as nessesary.
And someone here mentioned make sure they clean the cooler and lines as debree gets in there also and plugs it .
You have 34 sq.in. of clutch surface on you stock 48re trans torque converter. A ATS torque converter has 119 sq. in. on there triple lock torque converters. So you can see where it might be stronger.

4L60E auto in a 2004 GMC at 8,000 miles: Was this in a 1/2 ton truck? The 4L80E is its big brother. My wife's safari van has the 4l60E about to hit the 300K mile mark. The 4L60E's didn't hold up to well in the trucks.

Basically
4L60E - 350 turbo with electronics
4L80E - 400 turbo with electronics

it was in a heavy half ton. towed some gravel with it, shortly afterwards it blew apart going down the road. had the trans replaced under warranty and traded it for my dodge the next day. only time i ever towed with that truck, it didn't make it 3 miles, literally.
