Don't have a clue about the longevity of the 48re, but mine is hanging in there. Last I heard, Chevy is still making the Dmax and I bet they'd LOVE to take in that used Dodge on trade.

John Rodriguez has almost 20k on his trans and about 99% of that has been bombed and highly abused. I say take your truck to another dealer. What's breaking on the trans? You shouldn't have that many problems with your trans with that few of miles.

I will second that one!! John R's truck is living proof that the stock 48RE can take some abuse and come back for more!

I'd say find out whats breaking ,and correct the situation. Go to a dealer that has a good trans man . Warranty is fixing it but whos breaking it . If the torque converters is whats breaking ,it could well be the way your driveing it . If you force it to go into torque converter lockup under power you'll smoke out the converter clutches. I run a 1998.5 115,000 mi with no trans problems. Your 48re is a much better trans then the old 47re.

Dave,
Every now and then someone gets a bad one. Yours might just have a problem that cant get fixed.
What is breaking in that trans? The dealership must have told you.
I had a 96 with the 47RE and pulled a 14,000 lb trailer over half of the 275000 miles with no problems at all.
I now have 1 2004 with the 48re and pull the same trailer with a little more weight in it. 15,000 lbs plus the truck at 8,000 lbs making my total just over 23,000 with me in it.
I always pull in overdrive unless I am going up steeper hills or driving in heavy slow traffic. I am totally stock and I now have 60,000 miles with over half of that pulling this weight.
What are you pulling, and how are you driving it?
These trannies should hold up with reasonable care and upkeep.

i drive in OD most of the time also., as i do 70-75mph., the trailer i tow is a 29' toyhauler., about 10k loaded., not that much really., long and dhort type trips., some 2.5 hours other 18 hours.,
they never really told me what broke in it,. they replace just about every thing.,
it just revs up in gear and does not move., in D , R., 1 , 2 just does not move at all., i have had other trannies slips some., you get an idea it is going., this just goes., no notice., this time the trannie did not even get hot was still at 180-190ish .,

As bad as our trans guy is starving I bet he wishes 75% or more people had the same problem as you. 48re has been a daham good trans. I can only think of two that we've replaced. One was bad from the get go (new), and the other had 119K of hard towing miles on it. That owner was impressed and told us that the truck probably had 16 to 19 K of trailer behind it most of it's life.

talked to them today., they are sending a remanufatured trannie and a new converter out in a couple days.,
seems the front and rear clutch packs are smokes and cracked., the OD pack is burnt., the input shaft is blued, etc., they say they can not rebuild it.,
