I have a 2005 - 3500 and tow a 14,000 5th wheel. I was afraid of the same thing Gasket leakage. I didn't know that it is a reuseable gasket.

I opened the check plug and PUMPED THE OLD fluid out. This also allowed me to be exact in regards of the amount I pulled. The tube went to the bottom of the Differential and as it only has 8,500 miles on the truck. There was no sludge. If there would have been any, the pump and tube would have pulled it out. I used a pump system that they sell for replacing Lower Unit Fuild for outboard motors only I reversed the procedure. Instead of pumping it in as designed. I put a suction tube on the bottom of the hand pump and stuck it in the inspection plug to the bottom. IT REALLY WORKED GREAT AND WAS DARN QUICK....

It didn't take me any time at all to pull the fluid out and replace it. Probably about 15 minutes.

I have read several articles on towing and ALL indicate that the first 500 to 1000 miles when new should be broken in at lower 50 mph speeds and then the fluid should be changed. I went with AMSOIL

Just my two cents worth

John

Mr Gadget, I think you have your wires crossed. The NV5600 has a lifetime fill (not that I believe that) but the diff's require changing every 15k miles.

As far as making axle oil changes quick and easy for cheap, I've been wondering if it would hurt anything to drill/tap a hole in the bottom of the dif case for a 1/4" NPT drain plug (with a recessed hex head, so it won't get smashed on anything).

Anyone done this?

I will look into it I thought I read lifetime but a knows, I did not read 15K, I will look into it. Still that point was made to change it, it is easy to do.

EDIT
OK so I went and pulled my book and found that in the Schedule A up to 100,000 miles It does not say to change the diff fluid So at least 100,000 or more maybe not lifetime, but that is what the dealer papers say so I'm correct Yes??
Next are you are into changing the oil at 3750 miles it will tell you in schedule B to change it at 15,000 miles(diff oil). Don't know many people that change the oil at 3750 but maybe you do so that would make you correct yes?

Dodge also says to change the oil at 7500 sch B and 15000 sch A so whats the best to do? does everyone that change the oil with the high $ oil still go 3750.

Next time before you tell someone they have there wires crossed check up first.
I was not telling anyone not to change the oil in the diff because it was a lifetime fill but said what I do is at 30k-36k.

I picked up a cover from someone that relaced theres and I plan on doing it to that one so if it would not work good I will just use the old one.

My diffs must be fried as I haven't changed them in 40k miles and the time before that was 50k miles and I have power and did tow heavy.....maybe open diffs are easier on fluid than lsd....I checked mine and it still smells like when it went in....bad. and it still has good lubricity. ks
