as soon as it is poured into the engine. black oil means it is doing its job of cleaning the soot from the engine. no worries man. if it always is honey colored, they put the wrong stuff in. diesel oil is high in detergents and just means that it is keeping the particles suspended in the oil instead of allowing them to stick to everything and turn to sludge.

A lot of diesels I've had change to black very quickly, as in a trip down the street and back. My '02 however, stays nice and brown for at least 1000 miles...I don't know what I'm doing but I'm going to keep doing it

When i check the oil after an oil/filter change (no driving time on new oil, just idling for a bit to let the pressure come up) it's already black.

Mine doesn't go black for about 2000-3000 km's after I change it.

Same as the others... it's black as soon as it hits the pan and I check the level.

Maybe your oil pump isn't working.

Same here. As soon as I start it up and shut it down to check the level it is already black. Not as dark as when I change it but still black.

The last time the dealer changed the oil, it was black within a hundred miles. It is staying honey brown with close to 750 miles with Rotella 5w40 synthetic and Napa 7620. The Rotella synthetic is pricey but I can tell a difference with easier cold starts, slightly lower noise level, and .3-.5 better mpg. I did change the fuel filter (thanks horsehauler) at the same time so the mpg may be from that. I have not decided if I will stick with Rotella synthetic 5w40 fulltime but I will be using it during the winter months for sure.
