Hi everyone I'm new to the Dodge scene and I need some help in determining which motor and tranny this 04 is. The Vin # 3D7U38C04G26901. And what changes were made in mid 04. Everyone says get only an 04.5 and newer. I'm wondering why? I just sold my GMC dmax and looking for a real diesel truck.

04.5 changed to 325 hp instead of 305 hp, a bigger turbo, exhaust, and maybe injectors not for sure. Look at the tag on the side of the engine and it will tell you, im not for sure on the tranny though.

 

The valve cover will say 325hp on the side. Or if you can find the build date it will be after 1-1-04. Or if it is still stock, it will have a cat converter before the muffler............and will have 4'' exhaust from the turbo all the way back. (early 04's are 3'' from turbo back to muffler, then 4'')

Trans should be 48RE.

There are a couple of characters missing in the vin you have listed.

Assuming you have an auto, it's a 48RE, manual would be an NV5600. The lighter 47RE was only in 03, with some late models getting the 48.

Yes, that is what it has.

 

I prefer the 04's over the 04.5's. No cats to deal with. Mine has what appears to be a 4" exhaust all the way. Obviously no muffler.
