How to check for leaking injectors on 05, oil level rising
Hey guys,
I have suspected an issue with my injection for some time. About 15 months ago I pulled into a small town after a long highway drive (some spirited, no load), and the truck idled rough. I shut it off for a few mins while i got a coffee, fired it up, ran fine. Went home, changed oil, went about life.
Some months later another issue. When I shut the truck off after a long drive, it idled rough and smoked on start up, then cleared up. I had just filled up, so drove it and kept filling up the tank. Over the next few days problem went away.
I have noticed on my last few oil changes that the oil level is high. This last oil change I made sure the level was below the full mark. I had put about 2000miles on the oil, and its now 1/4" above full (check cold on level ground).
The truck used to have Edge J/A and mp-8 stack, but now it has only the mp-8 i almost never use.
Truck has 75k miles but has tranny mods and stuff so I doubt warranty would do anything.
Do 05s have this problem, and how do I check/diagnose leaking injectors?
If I have an injector problem, what are my options other then stock? I am very mechanically inclined with tons of tools so I am sure I could handle the injector change myself (any special tools needed).
I am looking for an economical solution, not necessary the most power.
Other then oil level truck runs well, no complaints.
Thanks a lot and sorry for the long post!

Does the oil smell like diesel? Rising oil is an indictation of bad injector, cracked body, loose cross over tube. Usually they will fill the crankcase if they go really bad. Has your EGTs gone up? Other than an injector flow test, or pulling the injectors and have them bench tested. Check out f1diesel(Don M.) he will test and upgrade your injectors, but your truck will be done at least a week. Hopefully someone else will piped up with better solutions for you.

after sitting for a few days truck starts good, its not as crisp as it was new but it wont run rough or anything.
As for smoke am sure it spits something small out, but to tell will have to get the wife to start it. Nothing major that i can see if i get out of the truck right after a start.
What would blue or white smoke indicate and how much of it must be present?
Thanks a lot.

I got the "scare" too but my oil level didn't change. I do notice though that I really don't pay much attention to the dipstick anymore. When I change my oil I put in three gallons and call it good. When I do Dad's I do the same. Over the next day or two I will then check the dipstick and they both will read different. But once the level is noted on the stick then I watch that for change and don't pay attention to the marks on the stick. Point is a dipstick is not a precise measuring stick nor are they all calibrated to the same length. I sent an oil sample off to Blackstone and no fuel or anything for that matter was found in my oil. They said it was a perfect sample aside from the viscosity a little less than they liked but not to worry about it. I think that would be a great way to diagnose it other than a kill test performed by an experienced dealer. I ran an EZ on my truck about the next day I left the dealer. Used to run it on three all of the time until I got scared and then it's been on one since then and I got a rail pressure gauge too.

Yeah, with mine I get a huge difference in reading if the engine has run within about the last hour, as opposed to first thing in the AM.
You could send a sample to blackstone labs, and find out for sure how much fuel you've got in it.
