How Accurate is Computer MPG?
How accurate is the computer mpg? Accurate enough to base real world milage on? I am comparing two new trucks & will buy one of them. Some members suggested checking mpg on same stretch of road. Sounds good but only IF computer mpg is accurate.

I use the overhead on all 3 of the ones that have graced my driveway to tell me nothing more than what direction the nose of the truck is pointed, in a very general sense of course.
Add some goodies, gadgets, and BOMB's...totally useless.

about .3 mpg shy before the installation of the EDGE EZ; about 2.1 to 2.3 mpg over after installation. You'll never be able to make an accurate comparison based on a short-term test drive.

I have kept track of mileage since new. I now have over 8000 miles racked up and my overhead is within 1% of hand calculated.
It is sometimes a little low or a little high on a tank by tank basis but that has more to do with how much I top of the tank.
A coworker recently bought a new CTD (after riding in mine!). I recommended that he test drive them on the highway and set the cruise to 65 mph. Then reset the computer and see were the mileage settles in. I realize this is just a rough guide but it may weed out the worst ones. I told him to look for one that does around 17-18mph. Mine will actually do 20+ but I have a 555.
Anyway, I don't remember the exact numbers but of the two that he drove, one showed a significant improvement over the other (both equiped the same). By significant I mean about 2-3 mpg. This may have just been computer diverences but it didn't hurt to try.

My is consistently about 3 mpg lower than hand calculated. You would think that one thing a computer does well is add and divide numbers. Why can't they get it right? I had a 2500 with the Hemi in it, and the overhead was within .1 mpg of my hand calc. By the way, my truck is stock.

Mine was always real close, within a couple tenths, until I got that box . If i keep my foot out of it, the comp is still real close.
