HELP! White smoke and loud ping !
Looking for some diesel knowledge. I've got the 06 5.9l 2500. One morning at start up I noticed alot of white smoke and rough idle for about a minute. The truck will do it when ever it sits for about 2hrs or so. Took it to the dealer, they reflashed for white smoke with no change. Took it t another dealer in the area, they re-flashed with a newer tsb update. Still no change.
At the same time, there has been a loud "ping" or "rattle" on the turbo side. It only really gets loud when I shift from park to drive. Or if Im going thru the neighberhood at idle speed. It really sounds like crap. Any one have any ideas that I cn come at the dealer with so they will fix it. Ive read that these symptoms are injector related.

The white smoke after sitting overnight is from an injector leaking down when the engine is off. White smoke is unburned fuel. I talked through the troubleshooting steps with the service manager and both he and his diesel tech agreed it was an injector. At first they wanted to change the fuel filter and run some injector cleaner through it. When I explained that I had done that, they ordered the injectors. I was surprised that they replaced all of them. Their reasoning was that if one injector went bad, the others weren't far behind. Comparing this to other stories I've read here, I have an unusually awesome dealer.

Just curious, were you guys using any kind of fule treatment up to the point when the injectors failed? I have 17k miles on mine, have not had any problems with the injectors. I was originally using PS, switched to Howes, but am going to switch to Schaeffers fuel treatment. Hope you don't have any more issues, that really stinks!

Why is it when you take your truck to the dealer for a problem, they look at you crazy? Like you have absolutley no idea or concept of how a Diesel Engine works. I brought up the whole idea of bad injectors. The service manager just stared and smiled. Also they always minimize the symptoms. One mechanic at another dealership said "maybe its your cat-back exhaust system Making the engine ping". That comment was absurd.
Could anyone give me some tech advice? I would like to go back to the dealership armed with somemore knowledge on the issue. Also all the possible ways that they can diagnose the problem.

My first problems occured at around 2k, I had owned the truck for about 2 months. Walked out started it and it was aweful, ran perfect the night before. Called Chrysler roadside and they came and got it. 2 days latter got truck back, with new 3&5 injectors. Still had intermitant problems with rough idle at startup, took truck to dealer and they came back "could not duplicate", at this time they ran tests on fuel, my guess is to check if gas has entered system or maybe additives..I had never run anything at this time. About a week later had the rough idle at startup and it thru a code, used key method to read on dash came up p0302 "misfire #2". Took truck to dealer after weekend CEL had gone out because the rough idle only occurs briefly at startup and not everytime. Dealer had truck for 2 days, then ordered #2. Had truck for 2 more days when replacing #2. I have since started running Mopar diesel additive every now and again. I have not had a rough idle startup since the last injector. Holding my breath and knocking on wood that it continues this way. Truck does run better then it ever has at this time. MPG is better also, so maybe #2 was the real culprit..
I just want to be able to trust this truck without waiting for the next failure...
Finn, maybe it would be worth a call to Chrysler customer service, My feeling is this is totally there problem and is happening on alot of trucks.

the other thing to watch is your oil the level will go up with the bad injector it is suprising how fast it will.mine ran fine started fine but oil level was goin up & you could smell diesel at idle + white smoke from breather.

Finndog54, why do you keep making more posts in different sections of this forum. Keep it in one. You are not going to get better advice if you post all over the place. Where are you on working with just one dealer on this issue? Have you picked one dealer to work with and been back a second time?
