I used a CAT strap wrench to remove the factory filter. Between being overtightened, that clear coat stuff, and probably not oiled before being installed, it was TIGHT!!!. My Cat strap wrench is about 7 years old and has been STOOD ON with a long handle 1/2 drive ratchet with a cheater pipe (a.k.a torque multiplier) on it and shows no signs of wear and has never failed me....
Note to Cummins assembly plant: A LITTLE oil on the seal would be nice!!!!

This is what I end up doing if the filter ends up being a bit too tight.

I find it is easier to remove the filter if the engine is still warm.

I bought my first diesel last week ('07 Cummins) and have been watching this thread. I wanted to change the oil when I got to 1000 miles and this thread had me worried.

I joined a gym and have been eating Wheaties every morning for a week. I stopped by the liquor store and bought a 5th of JD. I stocked up on band-aids and filter wrenches.

I drove around the block to warm the oil and prepared to go to war with the factory filter.

Before I crawled under my truck I stood in the driveway and started slapping myself in the face ( getting pumped up,it works in the movies). I got myself in a position to give me the most leverage and with a mighty strain I went at it with the filter. Much to my surprise the filter cried uncle with nary a whimper.

I was lying under my truck thinking "well that was pretty anticlamactic"

I think the filter got the last laugh though. I'm pretty sure I threw my back out when the filter broke loose so easily.
