heavy hauling 4:10 or 3:73's

Whats up guys im about to get my new truck and i looked at the sticker today and it didnt have the 4:10 gears in it. My other truck had it 4:10's. Im pulling with a 26k fifth wheel and a 50 ft trailer. so how wll it be affected with 3:73's should i get or find one with 4:10's Thanks in advance guys.

If its a 6-speed, 3.73s are the only ones availble, with the lower overdrive in the g56, youll be the same as rpm nv5600 with 4.10s.

If you get a auto, better get a truck with 4.10s

If I towed 26k a lot, I would want 4.10's. But, your mileage will suffer if you do a lot of highway, unloaded. If you pull just once or twice a year, I would get 3.73's.

ive got an 06 with the 6 speed and the 3.73's
i tow a 40 ft triaxle. truck and trailer are 7000 kg empty
ive had enuf pipe on her to be at gvw of 15500 kg which is 34100 lbs
loaded that heavy i do about 12-14 mpg
you will lose a little on the climb but you have them 6 gears to choose from
i wouldnt worry to much about it unless your more worried about pulling than mpg
i dont think i would want to pull that much with an auto anyway
also if your going to pull that much weight spend the extra few $$ and get the cummins exhaust brake. I know other people around here talk up the aftermarket brakes but you get a factory warranty with the cummins brake

My last CTD had a 5 speed with 3:54 gears, and it struggled pulling my 14,000+ 5th wheel. I finally ended up installing a Blue Chip Performance module with a Banks exhaust to make it acceptable. My new truck has the 4:10 gears, and I think the increase in pulling power far outweighs what little difference in MPG there may be. My old truck averaged 11.3 MPG while towing. My new truck averages 10.4 while towing, but it only has 5,000 miles on it and really isn't broken in yet.

With that said, the 3:73 may be a good compromise between what I had in my old truck and the 4:10's. My old truck had a HUGE dead spot between 3rd and 4th gear, which the new 6 speed has corrected. If I were pulling a 26,000 lb. 5th wheel like you, I think I would want all the power advantage I could get, and I would go with the 4:10. Good luck with your decision!

THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE 07'S ARE NOT THAT AVAILABLE WITH THE OPTIONS THAT I WANT I HAUL NEW CARS FROMPORT TO THE DEALER. THE TRAILER IS 53 FT LONG AND I FIT 3MEDIUM SIZED CARS OR 4 SMALL CARS THE 5TH WHEEL I HAVE IS A 26K AND THE TRAILER WEIGHT IS 8600 LBS. I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO I REALLY LIKE THE TRUCK I PICKED BUT THE ONLY DOWNSIDE IS IT HAS 3.73 IN IT AND I DONT WANT TO BUY IT IF IT NOTS GOIN TO SUIT MY NEEDS ,,,IT GETS SOO FRUSTRATING

If you are going to haul heavy with an auto make sure you get the 4.10's. The best tranny and gear would be 6-speed manual and the 3.73's if you haul heavy IMHO. You could live with the 3.73's maybe????

Yes, it really depends on the mods. If you are gong to go auto, you need it built to be bullet-proof. If you go manual, a new clutch and some power and you can go as low as you want. I tow almost 14,000 and I am running 3.19s (because of my tires) and will be in the 2.89 range when my new ones come and I have no problem. Having an insane amount of power in my truck definitely helps!

well i was going to to the basics intake exhaust and get the edge with the attitude ,,maybe the arc flow from ats and after all that i was planning on the tranny. i have left ova parts from my 06 that had gottin tottalled last month so then imma go wit the 3.73 and mod it up ,,,but how will it be stock ,,bc i have to get back on my feet bc my truck was my work truck so i havent worked in the past month recovering from my accident. my truck saved my life. every panel was damaged but the cabin was in tact for the most part. the doors didnt open but i climbed out the window and i was good. now im left to deal with the dam insurance companies. so then im goin to go with the 3.73's . i hope it will last longer than my old truck. that one lasted only 84 days. if anyone wants to see i have pics and the news article

Personally I'd stay away from the current auto, trying to pull that much. That being said if you have, or are willing to spend some moolah on the trans I think that you could upgarde it to handle it. I pull a 29' wilson steel\alum gn and gross out at a total of between 28000lbs and 34000lbs with a 6 spd. I have tried out another 02 auto before, and in stock it had a hard time just towing the trailer. The 06' have a little better trans I think, but I have not diven(towed with it) yet. I myself am in a bit of a similar dilema as I would like an auto mega cab so that I could feel comfortable(able to sleep in the passenger seat ) when the wife is driving on vacation, and even for ease of use for employee operation, but am unable to find any easy or cheap answers to hauling heavy with an auto yet. So, sorry not too much wisdom to give you, only a little of my experience.

Trinity, Your not going to be happy with the 3.73. Trust me. A nice thing about the new chassis cab, is they are availeable with 4.10 and 6spd manual trans or 6 spd aisin auto. Theres a few slts around here pretty well equipt and their not as expensive as a regular pick up. You might want to consider the cab/chassis, Their available and you'll probably find one near you if you search dodge.com.

On my stock truck before mods, I hauled 31,000 GCVW (scaled) with my 6spd and 3:73's - got around 12MPG and no problems w/power that I noted. She is, as signature says, QC, 4x4 w/hauler bed (heavier than pickup bed). That was about an 1800 mile interstate run - 65mph.

Now I have the Pac Brake, gauges, 4" dual, intake - so I'll feel a bit more comfortable on stopping and certainly have more power with Superchip on tow/perfomance mode. All around I'll be a bit more "comfortable" with that weight range.
