HD Snow Plow Prep Group

HD Snow Plow Prep Group
I am ordering a new 2500 CTD 4x4 short bed. My fleet sales guy says I should include the snow plow prep group because it includes a heavy duty transfer case housing (cast iron vs. aluminum). I won't be mounting a snow plow, but he says do it to get the stronger case. Is this true? Is there any downside, like excess weight on front axle? The cost is only $114. ??? ???

The protection group also provides the skid plate under the transfer box. A nickel here and ther doesn't seem like much especially when you're taking a mortgage to buy these things, but they add up and I for one wouldn't pay the extra for something that I'd never use. Just my way though.

Re:HD Snow Plow Prep Group
I have the snowplow prep on my truck and I can tell you that I still have a aluminum t-case. I think the only thing the package adds to these trucks is a t-case skid plate. We already have heavy duty cooling, batterys and alternators. I don't know about the front springs being different or not but my truck drops very little with my 8' fisher.

Do these new (2003) trucks have different transfer case options?? I know on the 2nd gen trucks there where 2 transfer cases, NV 241 and the NV 241 HD. The NV 241 HD was an optional heavy duty version of the standard transfer case put in the 2500 diesels or you would get the NV 241 HD if you ordered the snow plow group. The NV 241 HD came as standard equipment on 3500 trucks.

Re:HD Snow Plow Prep Group
The only option for 03' t-cases is either manuel shift or electric shift. I am not positive on this but I think the manuel shift is a NV-271 and the electric is a NV-273. I belive I read that both of these cases are stronger than the NV-241HD. Also, I am not sure if you can get the electric case without getting the laramie package. Personally I plow snow and I prefer the manuel case and it seems easier to shift easier than my 241HD did.

I was checking D/C specs and they list two transfer cases for the 2500/3500 HD. NV271 standard for the ST and SLT, manual; NV273 optional SLT, standard Laramie, electric. All aluminum case.
