Lift pump

My lift pump just went out approximately 300 miles from home. Had to be towed into a local dealer and three days later it was fixed. What is the TSB number and when did Dodge start replacing the pumps?

I've put a couple of them in and have two more coming in soon that have had fuel issues. There is no TSB on this. The old lift pump has been discontinued and the in tank one is the replacement part. The part is available over the counter without STAR approval.......and it's probably coincidence, but the first one I ever did was on a stranded Californian truck.

Maybe J Body can confirm/deny this but what I've read is if your truck is in warrantee
and the lift pump goes out it will be replaced with the in-tank unit (as he stated) but
no cost to you.

If on the otherhand you just want to buy one the cost is on you for parts and I imagine some pretty significant labor charges unless you want to do it yourself. As I recall
Tommygun over on the TDR has some in stock and a pretty good price compared to
what you might find at your local dealer (check prices of course).

So having a spare won't help you much on the road like it used to since now it involves
removing the tank.

Guys,

I have a friend that has an 04.5 600 and we are not sure which LP he has. Did they do away with the old one for 05 or sooner?

Yes , only yhe 05's came with the in tank pump....and yes dealers can replace the pumps before they fail....We've done about 6 or so before thy fail...its who ya know.....I wish we could change every one's for them before they fail , but our dealership is small and I'm booking 2 weeks ahead.

So hoser, what you're saying is that they will/should replace the LP before it fails? I've got a pretty good relationship with my dealer. I'll talk to them tomorrow.

Thanks for the input.

I heard about this from the parts mgr at the local dealer a while back. He said they were expensive and took a long time to change (the're charging DC 5 hours labor?). How long has it been taking you to do the job?

If all else fails with the dealer you can get them from a Cummins dealer. Probably to have a spare just in case!

In tank pump is a Dodge item. Cummins won't have it.

04.5 has the lift pump on the filter housing. If anyone is curious that is where you look to see how yours is equipped.

J BODY,

That's what I thought. When I looked down low on the block of my buddys truck I didn't see it. I looked at the filter housing and saw something that sort of resembled a LP, but didn't believe that to be it. Wow, I'm surprised that dinky thing can suck fuel from the tank and even more surprised it sucks enough to allow his truck to dump smoke with the Banks Six Gun he has on it.

Thanks for the info!

Chalk up another Alberta '04.5 to the lift pump gremlin. Mine quit in rush hour on Thrusday night and is in gettin' fixed up now!

It had acted up a couple of times over the past six months or so, and finally bought the farm.

Ken
