Hard starting, Any ideas??

I have owned my truck for about a year now and it has always had a extened cranking issue. Cold weather, Hot weather, cold/hot engine temp, before/after mods, it doesnt matter. Its only about 2-3 seconds longer than normal basing this off of friends dodges. Also, 0 degrees and under it will not start unless pluged in. I replaced both batteries, fuel filter, I run 10-30 rotella in the winter it will crank over just fine but no smoke, sputter, nothing till i plug it in for a couple hours. I run good fuel with diesel 911 in every tank when it is cold. The grid heater seem to be working because when I start it when it is cold that head lights will go dim with the grid heater cycles. I have also noticed that somtimes when it its idleing it will have a little sputter every 10 seconds or so. No its not the A/C pump its a miss. I have two trouble codes, 2149 I think had to do with a bad connection on my edge harness because it would sputter when i would get moisture under the hood so i cleaned and greased connections and it seemed to fix that. There is also a 0480 code which is new. I am mechanically inclined, I do all my own work but just dont work on a Cummins every day like alot of you. I think it is some sort of a fuel pressure issue. Any places too start or input would help alot. It just makes me sick when thinking about my old 24V that I once started when the air temp was -38 degrees and it sat all night. Thanks, Jake

What is your fuel pressure? How about AIT sensor?

You are not suppose to run the 911 in every tank. It is for emergency thawing.

I could be wrong but I had the same issue and codes. I had to have all 6 injectors rebuilt. Could be that or the pressure relieve valve is bad.

Yeah, I have been told that before about running diesel 911 but a ounce or two in every tank shouldn't hurt should it?

I wouldn't think it would. I'm going to bet you have at least one weak injector. I bought a set from a guy on here that claimed they were remanned and had only about 5k miles on them before he swapped them out for something else and after the first few starts the truck got where it wouldn't start at all without a boost of starting fluid. Ran great on them just wouldn't start.

Please let us know what you find out. I was on the way home tonight in my early 04 with juice, felt an odd thud, and then the CEL came on. Checked codes, 2149. When I looked it up it says some sort of short on cylinder bank 4-6...

I think that can also be from a bad valve cover gasket. The injector wires run through it and it could go bad and short out. There is alot of threads on it. I didnt think this was the problem with my truck because it would just do it over bumps and after leaving the car wash. Cleaned and greesed all connection too/from edge and all seems fine.

Ill check into that. Why would it only not start in cold (10 and under) temps though? I just gotta go and get my rail pressure checked already. I dont have a gauge and the local dealer want $175 for diesel diagnosis. Anyone know how much and were to get a good new one? Or do they just check with the scan tool?

i beleive they use a scanner, I tried finding something to check my rail pressure with no luck.
A welder I work with has an 01 and when his gets cold it seems like the transfer pump stops working, we pulled the filter cap off and it wasnt pumping a drop, I dont have much familiarity with that setup as my pump is in the tank, but i beleive it should be flowing quite a bit when you open the filter and roll the key on. After his truck sat in the shop for a half hour it fired up like nothing happened. All i really suggest (which youve probably already done) is just make sure youve got transfer flow to your injection pump.
