Hard start, surges, had bad fuel, runs rough

Fuel tank picked up Dirty/water debris from some friendly neighbors I would drain water/fuel and get a rusty/watery content on the bottom. Dropped the tank, found alot of sharp small rocks, cant be good. Checked the intank lift pump and it had a thick layer build up over the fuel filter screen. Cleaned it all up, ran great for 700miles, clean fuel put some treatment in it and new fuel filter. Then it would start bellowing black diesel smoke on 1/3throttle applications. Merging onto the freeway resulted in the "throttle sticking" scenerio and the truck kept speeding up, put the tranny in neutral and engine revved to 2600rpm sputtering and stumbling. Upon parking it, the engine ran fine idle, but bringin rpms to 2000 resulted in the engine throwing smoke and going at 2700rpm and stumbling, then slow down a few 100rpms-2400rpm and run rough, stay at 2400 for 10 secs or so then drop down a bit more.

Truck needs alot of cranking to get started, Im thinking the Cp3 may be damaged or an injector is sticking open or has a damaged spray pattern to keep overfueling and overrevving. Im planning on tearing the fuel system apart, inspecting, cleaning and if its dirty, clean it put it back together and see if problems solved or pull injectors.

TTT, was up north last week when this happened, could have been kids playing around on Atvs near my ranch, Pops told them to keep away and the problems started after that day, so I suspect they could have pulled the prank and put dirt/water in my tank. I pulled alot of dirt debris out of the tank so it could not have naturally accumulated that much in 50K mi of life.

Havent had time yet to tear down the fuel system, will do tomorrow and see whats up. I''d like to know if anyone else has had a similar problem and what the solution was.

Update, Put a remote 2 micron filter on it, changed the tips ( I thought I ordered Injectors, i got Tips instead ~50HP~) Changed those out, ran better but still missing, did a ghetto check by taking wires off the injectors and running, figured #2 and #4 were bad, Replaced those, runs alot better but misses under load and now the truck will hold speed at 45mph If I accelerate, throttle does not let off unless I put it in neutral and it doesnt revv up like before but it holds that RPM, then after a second or two it drops back down to idle. How do you do a flow test on these injectors?

Update, Changed all injectors with cummins parts and kept the 50hp tips. Truck runs like new, powers there no stumbling. However, at 50-60mph I have this missing/hesitation that seems to go away when I take the tranny out of overdrive. Im thinking all the carbon buildup from overfueling has coated the exhaust and possible turbo, like slow spool time. So Im going to keep driving it and pick up my trailer in a week or so, tow 8-9klbs to blow out all that carbon cobwebs.

These trucks should come with a 2 micron filter standard and the fuel tank vents should have some tube/hose or restriction on it to prevent dirt/crude going into the tank. This should be a recall, but dodge aint gunna pick up the tab, they wanted 16grand to fix my truck, and they couldnt diagnose the problem. Im glad Im mechanically inclined to fix this, and I hope those reading would do the same, dont rely on the stealerships, be your own warranty.

TTT,

Towed about 6500lbs light load + 1000lbs fuel in bed. Having the truck in Tow/haul mode it runs fine, but once it goes into overdrive the engine starts hesitating and the hesitation gets stronger and worse as I apply more throttle. Taking it out of overdrive kinda resolves the problem but I can still feel the miss.

Mileage is in the gutter, towing i was gettin 12-13mpg, used to get 15-17 with heavier loads. Empty is down to by a 3-4 even though the "tips" rate then as more efficient.

If ANYONES had similar problems PLEASE POST, 210+ views does nothing when no one responds.

Have you checked your fuel control acuator and rail pressure relief sensor?

You sound like you pretty much narrowed down the culprit with dirt in your fuel system for the mis-fire, but the surge has got me wondering if you do not have problem with the cruise control, transmission kickdown, or Trottle Position Sensor. I do belive there is a TSB out for your model year truck but, I am not sure. Here is a TSB for OD shift problems for an 03 that could also fit your model year truck. ( http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2004/18-013-04.htm )

When you changed your tips did you adjust your valve lash too? I have heard of some people complaining of a mis and then had the valve lash adjusted to remove the mis.

Yes, the dealer replaced the Actuator on the bottom of the CP3 unit, thinking it would solve the problem.

Havent checked the rail pressure relief but I did take apart the return line from the rail-to-cp3 and it was a little dirty, cleaned it up and put it back together.

I did do a valve lash after the injector change, So I have brand new injectors from CUmmins West + Diesel Dynamics 50HP injector tips.

If I accelerate from a stop to 60-70 I have no hesitation, its just when I let off and resume the speed it starts hesitating. I put 2 quarts of 10w30 in the tank, seems to run a little smoother but I guess time will tell. Might take it to a competent mechanic If I find one, dealers are a loss cause as far as Im concerned.

Another thing to check is the injector lines #1 thru 6. Make sure they are not deformed or have any gauling issues. Have read that if one line is scared up it can cause all kinds of problems and missing issues. Hope this helps.
