Living in El Paso might have something to do with it. How cold was it overnight there last night?

at start up.

Have you checked for codes?

At 0, my grid heaters will come on, even if the truck has been plugged in all night.

How cold at night is it there? Do you plug the truck in at night? On the 06 and up truck's, the grid heater's don't cycle to start the truck unless the air temperature inside the intake manifold is below 55 degree's.

I had the that problem, and it was the Air Temp/Pressure Sensor, the Cummins Tech told me it was 62F and below, that the heater grid will kick in. Easy fix right on top of the of the Intake, two torx head screws, I think it was somewhere around $180.00 bucks. I'm glad I had it fixed before the winter set in -10F here this morning!!

Come to think of it, it seems like the grid heater on the 03 I had would come on at warmer temps than the 06 I have now....

I run my truck all summer without a gird heater.
I hadn't planned on running my truck this winter,
but I was having trouble with my tdi. So I ended
up driving it. This past week it has been around
0 every day, at night with wind chill -. My truck
stays outside, on start up it runs rough and smokes
for a few seconds then clears up. Because of
grid delete truck will show a low voltage code
from grid. So far I haven,t had any problems with
starting. My tdi is sitting under 3 feet of snow
and I don't plan on digging it out.

My 03 grid-heater stayed on while driving down the road and kept cycling until it melted the terminal off the battery. My question is, why does the grid heater need to come on while the engine is running? On my 98 12v I disconected that son of a gun and ran it like that for years.

It's to help compensate for the cold air that the engine is sucking in, which usually comes after you've just started it after making a quick stop, or on the initial first start of that cold winter day.

Mine is kind of weird. When I was in San Diego, it got to maybe 50* and the heater would come on in the mornings. I drove to Omaha on Dec where it was well below 50, and the heater never once turned on even on the first thing in the morning starts. Go back to SD and it comes on again?
