Grade braking with the 04.5 qnd auto tranny
I really need some sage advice from real time users out there!
I'm towing a 10,500# 5'er and have the hungries for a new DC with an auto trans. I have never owned a diesel rig, but am convinced it's past due as I've yanked the starch out of my gasser.
All that being said, I am of the impression that any prolonged downhill grade of 6% or more will have you wishing you had an exhaust brake. This wasn't too much concern with my gasser until I got on some 10 and 12% grades! Now I know what fun is all about.
Dodge disallows any EB with their Auto Trans mated to the Cummins for now. And for me, a stick is not an option.
Two questions:
1. When do you start to cross the line on _% downhill grades with my load?
2. Is there serious hope for a more rugged auto trans from Dodge in the '05 models? (I can wait if there is.)
I'm sure this subject has been discussed before, but I'm new to this all, and to date, have not found any good info.
Thanks, guys. I look forward to some highway hardened smarts from you all. (Yes, I'm from the South)
