In getting ready to order 04. A couple of ?'s.

I am getting ready to order a 04 and I have a couple ?'s.
I am going to be ordering a 04 2500 4x4 quad cab short box with ctd and auto trans. I will be using it to pull a 28ft enclosed car trailer with a show car or a drag car in it. I will be ordering it in the next couple weeks trying to beat the egr that I have been reading so much about about on here.
I live in IA, is there a High output and std. output for 04's?
What is a good crusing rpm loaded and unloaded? What gear ratio would work best for me (lots of inerstate driving) I would like to cruise around 65-70 mph, what gear ratio would U suggest I order?
Thanks for your help

Yes, two types of engines.
My advise is this, test drive the heck out of it. To make sure it don't have the vibration problem some seem to have.
I don't know for sure what gear you would like the best. I pull a travel trailer or a drag car with 3:73s with no trouble.

The High Output engine is the only diesel for 2004 unless you live in California or one of those other states.

Supposedly, the 2004.5 High Output will be 50 state legal so the standard output will history. I have no idea why anyone would choose a SO over an HO if they had a choice. The SO has the same HP as the discontinued Powerstroke 7.3L.

There are other guys on here that will be alot more help. I have had my truck for 1500 miles. I pulled the TT once and the race car once. The TT is not very big, 28 feet. It claims 8000 pounds fully loaded. I pulled it to the camp ground in the tow mode, and back in regular mode. I liked it much better in the regular mode. My drag car and trailer is light. That truck don't even know it is back there.
I didn't even use the weight equalizer bars with the TT.
My vibration is in the steering wheel and the foot controls. Mine is from 55 to 65 MPH. 1600 to around 1900 rpm. Most other guys say there trucks vibration happens at higher speed and rpm.

I would get 3.73 gears and the six speed manual. If you are doing lots of interstate driving you will thank me latter.

Combine having 3.73 gears with the overdrive and efficiency of a manual and you get good hwy performance and milage.

A manual is'nt that bad especially the new fully synchronized transmissions. When you mostly do hwy driving I think the manual is the ONLY choice. I consider city and traffic driving to be a valid concern for MTs.

I have driven many manual vehicles in hvy traffic. When I first started out yes I thought it blew goats. As time progressed and I learning some tricks and refined my technique..... I am the automatic...

I can teach someone how to hwy cruise a manual in minutes...

Re:In getting ready to order 04. A couple of ?'s.

I can drive one in traffic about as easy as an automatic... just from flogging enough hours in vehicles with manual transmissions.

Quite frankly there are times when I prefer it in traffic. All the manual trucks I have driven beit a pherd PSD or a CTD dodge 6spd have better engine breaking and with exp you use the extra ratios to find the best one to make manuevers like passing or accellerating at an on ramp. It is just so much easier for me with a manual.
