Gears mashing when putting it 4wd or low range

It seems that i have always had this problem...when putting the truck into 4wd hi or low and back again the gears always grind unless I turn the engine off then restart after it's in gear.

I can't believe that's normal.....any ideas?

Manual shift or dash shift transfer case?

I'd agree that is not normal. My manual shift is nice and smooth between 2H & 4H

Oooops, it's an Auto with tranfer case selector on the floor.

Mine goes from 2WD into 4WD fine. However, the first trans shift (usually reverse as I use 4LO for backing up my fifth wheel) slams into gear pretty hard. Gear shifts after that are not bad. Mine's the electronic switch . . .

My shifts are fine once the range is selected, it's only happening when using the transfer case selector.

I also use 4 wheel low when backing my fiver, makes it so much smoother.

Going from 2H to 4H should be seamless. You may get some clashing going to 4L though thats normal.

Going into 4L its always been best for me to push the clutch in while rolling about 2 or 3 mph. In the autos I've driven when going to 4L I've always went to neutral before the shift at a slow roll.

I have tried going to neutral first didn't make a difference....the only thing that has worked is shutting down the engine.

Read the owners manual. A automatic is much more difficult than a manual tranny. A complete stop and in park might be a suggestion. Understand how the shift is accomplished helps. Get conditions right for shifting and a agressive intelligent shifts gets the job done for me. LOL

Follow the instructions in the manual, you need to be moving about 3-5 mph. It should loosen up with use.

If you are stopped and NOT in park that is your problem!(for 4L) AS you shift the drivetrain is not moving when your stoppped but when you change gears in the TC you are no longer keep the drivetrain from spinning. 4H should not be a problem at all.

You may want to do a <fluid> change on the t-case. My first thought is it may a little low. I am always completely stopped and in neutral when shifting to 4-Lo.

Stopped and shifting to 4lo should not be a problem. When you take it out of 4lo, you need to shut it down - it's in the manual.

How are you shifting it in/out of 4wd?

On every manual shift truck I've ever had,if you ease it into gear it grinds and hesitates.

You need to put it into 4lo like you mean it.

I go straight from 2hi to 4lo all in one swift purposeful motion. No grinding,no hesitation, just slips right in/out of 4lo.
