Gear Whine?

I've got 200 miles on the truck and have noticed a whine that seems to be coming from the rear end at 55-60 mph under slight load, goes away under coast. Anybody else notice this on 11.5 in, 3.73's ???

Check the fluid level in your diff. They are notorious for coming from the factory low on oil.

Already checked, I insisted the dealer check it while I stood there.

Hmmmm....then I'll have to let the gearheads help you.

While I'm thinking about it....I'm not sure if I'd even be able to HEAR the rear end whining over the engine... [undecided]

Did you check it? Heck, they let a lot of them out of the factory low, AND the trucks made through PDI as well!

If its whining now, it probably won't fix itself - not that any additional lube after the fact would fix it either. Keep an eye on it, and tell them to standby for possible repairs.

Re:Gear Whine?

Well I have a question to add. I have been hearing a growling sound that starts in the upper 60s and is most noticeable around 75 mph. Higher than that and the sound starts to dimenish. I can't decide if its a bearing or a resonance in the exhaust system. I hear a similar sound when engine is in the same rpm band but a lower gear (around 2000 to 2300 rpm).

I did top off the rear and front diffs (32 and 14 oz respectively) with 50 miles on the truck.

Anyone else have a growl at that engine speed? (stock HO w/ auto tranny)

Re:Gear Whine?

Mr. Jimmy, I just got my truck back from the shop after having the same problem. They replaced all the bearings. It had 500 miles on it when I took it in. When I got it back I noticed the fluid they put in was number 4874459, which, according to the info in the owner's manual, is for a 5 speed manual trans. I gave them the right fluid number recommended by American Axle (who made the axles for these trucks) and they said they could not find it. I got the information on the proper fluid from guys on this site - it is Mopar part # 05102232AA. I educated the dealer and he is ordering the right stuff. So - you may want to quiz them when they replace your parts and put in new fluid.

And, as you might guess, they really don't like it when you know more than they do.

NC, I don't think its anything to worry about. Mine growls, but am not sure if its the same growl you're talking about. On the slab, mine spends lots of time @ 2300. If it's rpm dependent and not speed dependent, its prob an exh resonance.

Re:Gear Whine?

Checked my oil level after dealer supposedly checked it. Guess what? Still a quart low, gear noise is still there though. The tech that checked it managed to spill lube on the axle tube, just didn't get it in the rear end >

Re:Gear Whine?

Pardon my ignorance but I'm new to this Diesel obsession. I love my '03 and I this site is great. In any event, what does a gear whine sounds like? This is probably a stupid question and hard to explain but I really want to know because its kinda hard to hear something when your going 65 mph and the wife whining on top of all these noise. Thanks for the info.

Re:Gear Whine?

Dealer tech took truck for test ride and agreed that rearend has some noise. He wants me to put a few thousand more miles on it to see if it works itself out ??? I don't think this is going to happen and I'm not happy with the fact that I paid 35K for a truck and the rearend whines. Need opinions quick on this.

Re:Gear Whine?

They know there is an issue of some sort with your truck and they are trying to stall you ???. It will not work itself out. There have been a few others with the same problem of the rear humming/moaning/whining. Get them to repair it asap before it creates larger problems.
