G56 to NV5600 conversion

I wonder what i would have to have to put an nv in my 06. I was pulling the other night and when the sled hit it broke almost every gear inside of the g56 I would rather switch to the nv because i heard they are stronger and i can get one from one of my buddys for near nothing. Im just wondering if it will bolt up to the motor and transfer pretty easy?

i have not heard of anyone doing it.....i would assume it would be relatively painless...given that it was a midyear switch with similiar drivetrains.

I don't know what happened to yours, but in my opinion, I think the G56 is a better trans than the NVG5600. Everbody is so in love with NV5600's. All we ever do anymore is put reverse and sixth gear sycro's in them and the all are growly, even when they were new. I have had several of both, and I prefer the G56 any day of the week. But what do I know, I am just a stupid dealer, and have personally owned over 30 Dodge/Cummins?

I sled pull and i busted about every gear in my g56 you dont hear that to much with the 5600 i think it is pretty bad when a u joint can hold more than the tranny.

Hell, put a nv4500 in there! At least you can get parts reasonably cheap for them. I've beaten mine like Rodney King, and it has yet to break anything. (5th gear fix was done before I got it)

I've broken two dana 80's, torque-twisted the truck enough to crack the windshield, but no problems from the 4500.

I've not watched too closely, but your the first I've seen who shredded the G56.

Anybody else broken one? Just wondering because sledpulling is in my future also.

I've never heard of a busted G56 either - and they've been used for years in mercedes trucks

Well I did it and am pretty happy with it so far the nv is 3 inches longer so i will have to find some drive shafts out of an older truck. There are a few other minor things but i think it will be ok I pulled tonight but my clutch was slipping because we got some oil on it when we changed trannys.

Derrick.....did the single disc clutch from your G56 end up being compatible with the NV5600 ?

Shimmed the starter a half inch and took the spacer that came with my dual disk out and it worked fine.

bigd6.6,
I dont think some on this thread understand what kind of stress is put on components of a truck when sledpulling especially with the kind of power your running.

I have about 30 or so hooks on my Nv5600 and knock on wood it is still getting the job done!!

I blew a nv5600 in my 04. All I am saying is that they all can break, I have a hard time believing the g56 is weaker then the nv5600. But if you can get the other trans cheaper and it is what you want go for it.

One thing to remember is that the 5600 is no longer made, and parts for it are bevoming rarer and more expensive.
