G56 Failure at 38,700 miles what to do?
I went to replace my clutch on Saturday and noticed the input shaft on the transmission had a groove cut into the splines from the bearing retainer that you can see in the pics, and the bell housing had metal shavings and ATF fluid in the bottom. I grabbed ahold of the input shaft and I can move it side to side and touch the bearing retainer, which is what the throw out bearing rides on. My question is, wouldn't you think the input shaft should be case hardened steel? The bearing retainer, which is approx. 25ga material, which shouldn't be harder than the input shaft, has cut a groove through the splines of the input shaft. The next problem I have is my truck has 38,700 miles on it and we are out of the 3yr/36,000 mile warranty by 6 months. Do you think I have any recourse with Chrysler? If I had known that this was an issue I would not have bought a 1 ton truck to tow with. I just researched the 4500 and 5500 trucks and it seems that this is the same tranny that they put into those trucks. The only thing is noticed is their overdrive ratio is taller than mine. If anyone else has had this sort of situation please let me know.

The input shaft is held in place at one end by the pilot bearing. Sounds like yours has gone south and taken the input shaft bearing and seal with it. Fill out your signature so we can see what you have and better help you. I have not heard of anyone having this particular issue. Welcome to DTR.

Otherwise your in luck, bumper to bumper is not your tranny warranty, the engine and drivetrain warranty is 5yr 100k warranty.

shouldn't have ATF fluid in it... lol
but, you might be screwed since you pulled it apart. They have the right to be picky and not cover it since YOU not being a Chrysler technician pulled it apart.
what are you pulling that is causing a tranny failure at that low of mileage?
good luck.

We pull a 15k lb toy hauler. We have an "06 dually and according to the dealer the powertrain warranty does not apply to "06. They removed it. No the thruck is not modded in any way. All that has been put on it are gauges.

'07 warranty is 3/36 on everything except the engine. Not sure on '06, but thought it was the same.
Clutch gone at 38k mi and no hp mods? Seems a little early to lose the clutch. I'd try to press for warranty on both the clutch and trans. Unless it's something you did to beat on the truck, no reason the clutch and trans should go south on a stock truck with such low mileage.
FWIW, I've run a 90hp tune on my '07 G56 since almost new. At 40k mi, the clutch quit holding the extra power, but it still holds good at stock/near stock levels.

06 I believe is 3/36 vehicle warranty. After that, you've only got the Cummins warranty on the engine...
Anyway, I wonder if the dual mass flywheel could have taken out both the pilot bearing and input bearing?
It shouldn't be too bad to replace the input shaft, bearing and seal, then get a soutbend or some other decent clutch with solid flywheel.

My '06 had a 3/36 on the truck and a 100,000 on the engine.
If I were you I wouldn't tell anyone you're pulling a 15K trailer. That's more than Dodge would like you to pull.
And it would be easy to take out a clutch this early if you ride the pedal.
