G56 Failure
#169
Ok well I have owned both tranny's and here is my opinion- - - I broke a NV5600 while towing a Ford 250 Powerstroke (auto) backwards in my 01 HO. I guess that means that the NV5600 was a piece of Junk due to the fact that a Ford laid her to rest????????????? The shifting was sloppy compared to the G56, and the 6th Gear was great for the guy or gal that just likes to ride up and down the road. Loaded I would have to be in 5th anyway to keep the truck moving without killing the engine. But with all this said, I still like the 6spd better in all aspects over the Auto's!! The manuals have never left me stranded 800 miles from home in 110deg heat!!
Now my new G56 will handle the same abuse day in and out that the NV5600 would. I can shift faster keeping my momentum up and the better gearing in the tranny lets me run in 6th while going down the interstate at 70mph instead of 60mph in the NV5600. Everyone on here that has this bad taste in there mouth about the G56 will be the same people that will knock the new 6.7L Cummins only because that is not what there Ultimate Truck has in it. Oh and if my truck get put in the shop because of a Tranny Failure atleast I will be on the road in a couple of days instead of a Month or so due to the lack of Parts for the NowVoid5600!! !!!! All you guys have a nice day and quit worrying about other peoples sticks

My boss has an 02 2wd with the nv5600 and it has locked up on him and had to be rebuilt twice.......and he's only at 140k. He is probably the easiest driving person I know of. Takes forever to get up to speed. He only pulls a horse trailer with living quarters on the weekends......his daughter is a high school barrel racer. Anyway, after that happening to him I don't believe the nv5600 is anywhere near bulletproof.

If he would only sled pull with it...............Using it responsibly is boring.
Is anyone running a talley here? Seems to me the NV's are pulling ahead in failures here?

On reviewing this thread I think we can conclude a couple of things. The NV5600 is probably the best choice for sled pulling…now let’s do a national survey: all those who use their Dodge Ram trucks for sled pulling please raise your hands…..
Okay…102 is the count.
Now all of you who use your trucks for normal driving, towing, hauling (not @ 3X the rated CGVWR) please raise your hands.....
Okay... 609,618 is the count.
I’ve driven a few NV4500’s, NV5600’s, put 93K miles on a Ford PSD ZF 6 speed and now have a Ram 3500 with the G56. I’ll say without a doubt that the G56 is the smoothest, best shifting quietest tranny of the lot. If you want to pull a sled and don’t mind the loosey-goosey long throw shifting, high noise level and lack of replacement parts the NV is your best choice.

Well said. End of story. So what have we learned by this thread, ladies and gentlemen? Can someone sum it up for us?

G56 for the BlueCollar workers that enjoy the piece of mind that there tranny is going to last forever doing what it was designed to do!!!!!
NV5600 for those with more money than you can shake a stick at- - - -due to the fact that there replacement parts are going to be one off custom parts made by the local Metal Fab shop !!!!!
Everyone get off the high horse and just be glad that you have a 6spd instead of the slushbox! We are in a league of our own in towing performance and dependability!!! IMO-OP!!

All I really know is that I have a G56, and so far it has been a great transmission.

It took a month for chrysler to fix my truck it took me 2 days to put the 5600 in it and you can get parts at any good tranny place for them. I can pull fine in 6th gear my g56 wouldnt handle the abuse my 5600 will but hey it will only cost $1368 to fix my g56 myself and the aluminum case is a cost saver for chrysler i can get it for $219.
Hey - I want one too; pretty cheap way to enlarge my beer can collection!
