yep... it's normal until this happens.

ask wexman. he is the expert on this. this happened to me not long after i bought my truck. after they changed the belt it doesn't make the "noise" anymore.

Here Is The Thread

oh yeah... Deke... i wouln't be too proud of it. it will come back to bite you in the [Self Edited] sooner then you think. mine doesn't make a sound at shut down after the belt change. trust me... it isn't "normal" contrary to what some may say. once you have your belt changed (and believe me.. it will eventually happen ) yours won't make a sound either.

Mine has done it for 19,000 miles with no problem and no shredding.

It is just a normal part of my shut down of the truck.....to pause for the EGT to cool to about 350ish and listen to the authoritative chirp as I turn the key off and pull it out of the ignition in one motion. It is habit, along with turning off my a/c controls, radio, and locking my doors. If for some reason it doesn't chirp (like every 5th or 6th shut down it misses one), it makes me think for a sec something is wrong that it didn't "chirp".

Yep, heed Britt's words. See my post above. Like I said, I realize that many do chirp for some time with no ill effects, BUT...........IF your belt is substandard or otherwise worn, look out. That slipping which causes the chirp puts ALOT of strain on the belt.

I now carry a spare.

What's a sub-standard belt?

My truck has factory everything, are the factory belts sub-standard?

Yes they are. You unfortunately will find out soon enough. There will be a lot of people on here that will tell you that the "squeak" is “normal” but trust me… it’s not. Their time WILL come sooner or later. After I had mine changed I have had no problem (knock on wood) with my belt. The newer one that they put on is crosshatched and seems to be stronger. It also doesn’t have that annoying squeak… EVER.

Do a search for wexman & belt and you will find PLENTY of information on this subject. Trust me. He is the one to go to on this problem. He has been keeping tabs from the start.

Britt

What's a sub-standard belt?
In my opinion, some of them *may* be. The factory belt on my truck was the standard ribbed deal - I don't know if Cummins sources them, or Chrysler; it chirped like an SOB. I didn't care, because, as I said, my PSD did it, and I had no problems in 35,000 miles with that belt (about the only thing I DIDN'T have a problem with on that truck ).

I *knew* from reading posts that some chirping is normal due to the high compression of our engines. But....my replacement belt, which the dealer sourced, and says MOPAR, is ribbed AND crosshatched, and certainly *looks* a bit heavier-duty than the ribbed-only belt. Time will tell (knock wood - I don't want to jinx myself), and I now carry a spare. The spare I ordered from Advance Auto is also ribbed and crosshatched. THe replacement only ocassionally chirps, and when it does, it is not near as loud as the original belt did it.

Between here and on the TDR, there have been at LEAST a dozen owner's of 04.5s (and mine is an EARLY, January 2004 build) and 05s whose belts have shredded in the first few thousand miles, for no apparent reason - i.e. - pullies and tensioner check out OK. So, unless ALOT of these were installed wrong at the factory (which is possible, as there is NO room for error on these pullies), it is my opinion that Cummins or Chrysler is sourcing cheap belts for the assembly line.

My 0.02.

Wexman- my belt usually chirps on shutdown. I can understand that slippage will add extra wear. But- my truck has the crosshatched belt, not the ribbed one. I wonder if it has something to do with the tensioner?

Might be. On this one, I am stumped. Suffice to say, that chirping strains the belt, which will lead to wear, which could lead to failure.

Mine chirps everytime. 2005 w/ 2600miles. I've inspected the belt regularly and it looks new and it is the cross-hatched one and original from factory. Maybe they changed them??? Anyhow, I'm taking it in for a different type of "SQUEAK/L" that is getting worse and worse in the driver front. I think it may be the wheel bearing. Sounding more like metal squealing...ouch!!!

Maybe they have. Like I said, my replacement chirps ocassionally, but not EVERY time, and not LOUD, like the original one did. I think the cross-hatches help with the slippage.

OK - maybe I'm just a little slow... Or maybe I just don't know what I'm looking at - but the pics posted at the top of this page show a belt from two different angles, and you can see that one side is 'rough' and the other is smooth. I'm assuming the 'rough' edge is showing signs of wear? Sorry to sound dumb about this - I just don't know what I'm looking at. My belt looks pretty much like the one in the pics - I'm assuming I should have it replaced?

OK - after looking at the pics one more time I think I realized what you're looking at. The 'rough' edge is missing about 1/8" of belt on that side.... Sorry - I didn't see that the first time I looked at the pics. My belt is rougher on one side than the other, but it still has the full width. Also, it rarely squeaks on shutdown. So, that said, do you think I should get it replaced because it's rough on the one side?

Yes. Your belt is ALREADY starting to shred, and it's just a matter of short time before it goes and leaves you stranded.

Get to the dealer, and have it documented for your warranty record.

And here, people, is ANOTHER example of an 04.5 and up truck shredding its belt.
