Fuel Recommendations in Northeast...Hess?
I'm looking for fuel recommendations in the Northeast. In particular L.I. New York.
I've heard that many people like the Hess brand. I've been trying different ones (Hess, Gulf, Valero, and another) and noticed the truck is noticeably quieter when running the Hess. I started with Hess, tried some others, and now back to Hess and I definately noticed the difference.
I should also mention that my gas mileage was significantly better with the Hess (I know, I know too many variables) and that I have been running Stanadyne Performance formula in all tankfuls.
I'm looking for feedback on two levels:
1. The best fuels that are readily available in my area.
2. Of those fuels the specifics (if available) of why they're recommended and what benefits I should see when using them.
TIA

I have switched to Hess also. Was running Sunoco, but don't like the owner of Sunocos anymore. Hess has been working for me...Just worried sometimes about the sticker on the pump that says (low sulfur diesel fuel, use in 2007 and later vehicles may cause engine damage!!!) What? anyone shine some light on that?

I saw the exact same sticker on a fuel pump in Leadville, CO yesterday. Except the sticker also mentioned that said fuel was illegal to use in 2007 and later model vehicles because the fuel will cause damage to said engines and it has too much sulfer..huh what gives...fuel pumps are that sensitive, but all of us running earlier models will be okay?? I HATE the EPA.

I'm sure the reason they say it will cause damage is so less people "cheat" and buy higher sulfur fuel. near craig co I actually found "high" sulfur fuel my engine ran very quiet up front. though I only ran one tank I didn't notice it running worse let alone damaging my engine

i believe low sulphur vs. high sulphur will become an issue once they start putting catalytic converters on the diesels.
as far as hess goes, that's about the only game in town around here and i've had no issues with it so far. in the northeast they [hess] bought all the gibbs and merit stations and still kept the price below the other majors. you can also get a chase credit card from them and get 5% off every fuel purchase. this will save a few bucks if you pay your credit card bill on time.

LanceK,
Mikmaze has it right. Fuel up in NJ before going to Long Island. I was there 2 weeks ago and the fuel prices on LI were 20-30cents/gallon higher. I think the Hess stations are more common in NJ vs LI. Most of the LI retailers that I saw advertising diesel were Exxon, BP, etc. don't recall seeing that many Hess stations.
I was leary of buying the Hess fuel (in NJ), but I did anyway. It was no problem the truck, ran fine as ever on it. I topped up on LI at an Exxon, I think, that claimed to have "premium" diesel. It was like 3.35/gallon but I only needed 12 gallons to top off, no biggie.
One tip I picked up a while back when all fuel prices were fluctuating so much was to buy fuel on the NJ Turnpike or Parkway at the rest stops. The retailers there have to fix their price for an entire week regardless of what the market's doing. So do a little cost comparison in NJ too.
Remember it's summer and the traffic out east on the island is terrible during the week up to apocalyptic on the weekends.
Good luck , you'll need it.

Sounds like Hess is the preferred fuel around here.
Anybody notice their trucks running quieter on Hess?

Weird, I was thinkin of starting a post about NY myself. I have used Kwik Fill/ Red Apple fuel since getting my truck. But fueling up the work truck at a Hess the other day in Rochester, I noticed that the sticker said minimum cetane rating of 42. All the KF/RA I use say minimum of 40. I am thinking of using a tank or two of the Hess fuel, and seeing if I can get any increases in MPG. I know that was a minimum cetane rating, so in the end, they may be all the same. Another issue I have is that I get 5 cents off every gallon with my KF credit card. Hess is "normally" more $$, KF/ RA oil is drilled in PA (United Refining), so the closeness of the refinery seems to keep the $$ down. I would have to purchase the Hess fuel on my regular CC. I'll keep everyone posted. Oh yea, any Hess with #2 also has K1 also .

I actually go out of my way a little to use Hess because:
A. their fuel has the highest centane rating in the area of any major oil company (45) and the pump is so labeled. The unlabeled product at most other stations is 40, the minimum required by law. Apparently labels are not required either.
B. they control the refining and distribution of their product from start to finish. Most other majors trade loads all the time.
C. the price is good and you get a 5% rebate if you use their credit card.
D. All of the above!

I have run nothing but Hess in my truck since I got it 2 years ago because it is the cheapest fuel in my area. As MikMaze stated, Sunoco is at $3.00 per gallon while Hess is $2.53 and has been on the decline. Only other brand of fuel I put in is when I am in Pennsylvania camping. I fill up at the KwikFill but don't notice any change in performance of the truck.

The sticker is there for people who are driving 07's that require the ultra low sulfer. When the ultra low sulfer is completely phased in I'm sure that those stickers will be removed. If you are running a 06 or older don't worry about, it isn't meant for your vehicle. I think by the middle of October it's supposed to be completely phased in for on road diesel.
