fuel pump running constantly?

When I turn on the ignition, a pump runs constantly until I start the engine. It will run for several minutes if I let it. I don't remember it doing that before. Seems like I remember it running for a few seconds then shutting off. Is it supposed to run constantly before I start the engine? How do you know if the lift pump is going out? I assume that's what I hear running when I turn on the ignition.. Arlon

My fuel pump only runs at most about 20 seconds, and that is if I bump the starter. If I just turn the ignition on, the pump only runs for a few seconds.

On my 05 as soon as I turn the key on it will run the lift pump for approx. 20 seconds, I do not have to bump the starter like on the 2nd gen trucks. There is also a ticking noise which I do not know what that is, sounds almost like ignition spark for spark plugs. Hey maybe I have the new spark plug diesel

That or you have a leak between the tank and LP. Check with vaccuum gauge.

Prolly the LP itself though.

Either way, not something to ignore.

I don't think it's the grid heater because it will do that even on warm days when the grid heater does not cycle.

The grid heater has more of a high pitched whine or hum.
