fuel pressure problem?

I have had my truck at the dealership for poor fuel economy and they reflashed the computer for the "white smoke at start up/poor econ". At the same time I asked the service manager to check the fuel pressure. He told me that the only way to test it was the old pop the hose off the lift pump and do the volume test-like they do on 24 valve trucks. He also said that if the fuel pressure was too low it would set off a code, which I know is not true. I had a weak lift pump on my 2000 and did'nt discover it until it messed up my injection pump. It did'nt throw a code until the injection pump was on its way out. My question is... what is the correct way to test the fuel pressure on the 3rd gen trucks? flow? rail pressure? or a combination of the above and what is the procedure? any help would be aprreciated.

I am curious about this too. I am not going to have mine "tested" though. I am going to have a Fuel Pressure gauge installed ASAP. After reading the stock fuel pressures for a while (which I understand they run around 6 or 7psi or less), I am going to purchase an aftermarket Lift Pump.

Not sure which one yet. Possibly FASS, but considering Wallbro.

get a fuel pressure gauge and a banjo bolt from genos. I dont know if the service tech will take that as a true reading, but its better then their reading.

The pressure I saw with the stock lift pump scared me. Since I switched to the Walbro, I'm at 17-18psi always.

Can you tell me where you got your Wallbro? Price? Did you change out to bigger fuel lines or add any spin on type filters? Where did you hook up your fuel pressure gauge and is there anything special to buy to do that other than a banjo fitting?
