Fuel mileage update

Fuel mileage update
I am new to this forum because I owned Powerstrokes before this 600. I was immediately disgusted with the MPG that I was getting. I realize that there is some break-in time required, but I was getting 11 empty 7 towing 10K.
I took my truck to the dealer today, and my truck was one that needed the update program.
On my first 3 tanks of fuel I would reset the overhead, and fuel mileage would start out around 17, then drop to 14 on the hwy, and then fall to 11 with some idle and city driving. Even after resetting while cruising on the hwy it would drop to 14-15.
Now with the new program my power is up, and mileage showed to be 21 on the hwy over a 30 mile drive at 65 with 4.10's. After idling while changing a flat on a girl's car and then 5 miles of city driving the overhead still shows 19.1.
I am looking forward to seeing what it does for a full tank, and after towing.
My truck now has 1100 miles on it (700 of them towing 10K).
Hopefully this is good info for some.

How can you tell which trucks need the program update? With only 1100 miles on it, yours must be a pretty recent build (or did it sit on the lot for awhile?). I'd sure like to get an improvement like that.

forcefed88,
I'm curious as to what your engine mfg. date is (on the valve cover sticker) and the truck mfg. date (door). Maybe there is another flash out now, other than the one issued around 3/15 for hesitation, white smoke. Are there any details on the Repair Order? Was your primary complaint on the R.O. poor mileage, or did you complain of something else? My mileage did not seem to increase when I had the re-flash, but back then the truck had less than 1,000 miles on it.

I'd like to know myself. My build date was around the first week in March and I'm averaging at best 12.5 to 13.3 with local driving and 2600 on the odo. Would love to better that if there is a firmware update more current.

I will get the build dates in just a little while. I know that the door sticker is 2/04.
The technician told me that not all trucks were covered under this service bulletin. He didn't think that mine was, checked the computer code with the scan tool and it was.
Now I haven't checked it by hand, but I just drove another 45 miles at 65 with the AC on, and I had to set in traffic for about 10 minutes and the overhead still reads 18.7. It is up 4-5 MPG according to the overhead. I will have to refill, and follow up next week. I will get the dates and look at the R.O. in just a bit.

C'mon, Jeremy!!! We need help NOW! My best is around 14-15 and i am suffering big time. Give us all the particulars of your flash, otherwise - we continue to feel ripped off 5K for this engine. It is the best and most fun i have had in a long time but more mpg would put frosting on our cakes!

Yes, what is the secret. I relly like my truck, but with 11,000 miles on the clock I am disappointed to only get 16 mpg driving 65 mph. I took it to the dealer and they simply said there were no reflashes applicable to my truck. Mine was built 01.21.2004.
The engine even misses occasionly, but since the tech could not repeat it they claimed they couldn't do anything about it.

I will join the crowd of those wishing for better fuel economy. I get about 10 pulling my 11k fiver and at best 15+ empty on the hiway. I just ask my dealer about any TB and he said nothing showed up on a VIN scan. If there is way to improve this, I too want to know!

Do you happen to have the TSB #?
I think i'm going to stop by the dealer and see if I can get it done on mine.
I'm still not getting better then 11 - 13 city, and I tend to accelerate slowly and keep RPM's down.
I have about 4000 miles and I've towed several times, although all under 6000 lbs.
It sounds from your story that I should get closer to 15 city and closer to 19 highway, which I'm about 2 - 4 mpg under both.
Anyway, glad to hear the reflash made your truck run better.

Did they put a sticker on it somewhere saying it has been "modified". Mine has supposedly been done but I don't see any improvement. Went back to dealer and they said they found a " bad injector"...no difference...I asked if they did any updates and they said they were all current...but there is no sticker. I'm sick of this...

I called my dealer this afternoon about this. There is NO new reflash for mileage, only the one for the hesitation everyone knows about . DC is calling 12-14mpg. normal and said I was lucky to be getting 16.5 around town( not towing).
