Angry Fuel Mileage Question?

Is it normal for a 5.9L to get 15mpg my buddy gets 18-20 same engine same rear end same truck whats the difference? I cant get over 15.2mpg even highway diving. I drive reasonable and I am chipped with the edge at level one. What can I do to get better mpg. FASS? Airdog? 2 Micron conversion? Im very frustrated on this I have talked to numerous peole who own cummins and it seems everyone is getting better mileage than me.

I'm the same as Old Dodge Owner. Mine is 12.5-13 mpg running empty. I have cat and muffler delete, AEM brute force, Edge EZ (doesn't matter if it is on level 1 2 or 3), but I think what is killing mine is the full replacement Ranch Hand front and rear bumpers and my toolbox loaded with about 500-600 lbs of tools. I am trying to figure out what I can do to make it a little better.

How old are your filters? (fuel, oil etc) I got the best MPG from my edge from level 4, low end fueling on 1. Good luck!

Well I put a new fuel filter in Spring and Fall Intervals. I have also noticed that my boost on my edge is always at least 2 or 3 no matter what. Of corse it goes up when I accelerate but never drops below 2 except when at a stop. Also noticed it surging every now and then when on cruise control. Has anyone heard of a sensor getting dirty and affecting the air fuel mixture? I thought it was located by the ram air intake somewhere just curious.

Need to filter more, every 15,000 miles (or around that).

Some will even tell you to replace it every oil change.

As far as the mileage, if you have no programmers on you could try getting the truck reflashed at the dealer. Might help.

I only put on 12,500 miles a year and I replace the fuel filters 2x a year. I have a Edge with Attitude.

I feel for you exwrestler. I don't understand why you don't get better mileage. I have an 05 bone stock with the exception of a K&N air filter element in the factory box and I get 15+MPG pulling my camper (on highway)and even better without it on the highway. I do have a question about your tires though, with 20" wheels, did you change the overall size of your tires (IE. went from say a 32" tire to a 37" or bigger?). Changing the overall size of your tires will drop your fuel economy, I don't know with all the other equipment you have how it would effect your fuel economy. I hope that maybe I have given you something to think about, by the way make sure your filters are clean, fuel and air, that makes a giant difference.

How many miles are on the truck exwrestler? Mine was getting between 12-15 empty until it got about 45k on the odometer and now, even with close to 300k, it still get almost 20 mpg.

That's a good point. My motor was replaced under warranty. I've only got about 20k on the Cummins Reman.

All else being equal on the truck, it boils down to the driver and the use of his/her right foot. Excessive rapid acceleration, constant use of service brakes and high speed (over 55 MPH) will kill your MPG. The truck on my signature with 37" tires will get 22+ MPG on the highway @ 60 MPH.

Drive very conservatively (slower than an 80 year old half blind grandma) and your MPG will go up.

This is probably not the issue, but just to make sure, since I have seen this mistake made before:

Since you have 20" rims, I am assuming you have taller than stock tires as well. Stock are 31.3" tall. Your speedo and odometer are factory set for that size tire. Most people are aware of the speedo change when they go to larger tires, but forget about the odometer. If you have not had your speedo corrected for the larger size tires, your odometer will be off as well, and so will your fuel mileage calculations. Using an uncorrected odometer for your hand calculations with taller than stock tires will show low fuel mileage. Borrow a GPS unit and use it for your mileage and speed numbers. Run it for a full tank, then use those numbers for your fuel mileage calculation. Some folks have gotten a very pleasant surprise after doing that.

FYI, my mileage averages about 17 around town with stock tires with the stock tune on the programmer.

My wifes truck ,05 4X4 cc auto , she gets around 18 - 20 MPG running empty , that is figuring by hand , not the overhead. The computer says she gets more than that, but she just rolls along in no hurry.
