fuel mileage with a cummins crew cab

My average is 19. I have gotten as high as 28, all freeway, no traffic at 70mph. 13k miles.

My truck is a month old and I have 3500 on it. I have been watching these type of treads on several sites. All in all I think I'm getting about average. I don't trust the computer above it's just to liberal. it says 19.9 but I have calculated actual refuel gallons and miles traveled. I do about 75% highway and 25% city and commute over 100 miles each day. The actual mileage of this truck is just over 17 MPG I would have to say I baby the thing on starts and stops but when I hit the highway I am at 70 and 2K RPM's. I'm a little disappointed with the mileage but have heard through threads I might get a mile or so better after break-in.

I have read these threads carefully. Keep in mind the guys getting 22 or better are all driving manual transmission trucks. The guys getting 18 have all indicated automatics. There is always a price to pay for convienence. My price seems to be 4 MPG.

I put a K&N air filter on my wife's Camry and she got about 4 MPG better. I'm hopeing K&N comes out with one for this truck soon. However I don't expect 4 MPG. I don't tow much and if I had studied just a little better I might have got a different rear end. I believe this would have helped a little as well. All in all I'm very happy with my truck.

I agree with Rednose on the mileage, just cant beleive you guys are getting that high milage. I have an 03 with 10,000. The mileage sucks. 14 city & freeway, 6 towing. The best was down hill 19. I had a 90 five speed and got 14 towing and 21 freeway. What a suprise with the 03. We tow a 32ft. 5iver about 11,000 pounds.

I got 19 mpg on my last fill up at 3500 miles on the truck. Will the mileage get better as I put more mileage on it. It has an EZ Edge and I wear heavy foot wear. When I went to sythetic on a gas vehicle I got 1 mpg better. Is this the case-w-these trucks also. I am paying about $1.60/gal and I really hope we get some free crude out of the sand farms where our boys are being shot at (and worse )

I'm not really going by miles per gallon, I'm going by miles to the tank. I get about 530 - 535 miles from a tank. And when I fill up I put in about 29-30 gallons of fuel.

It does really great from 0 - 2,000rpm, anything above that is when it starts using some fuel.

I've done some research on the EDGE chip and I think that it may be benificial to us even if we dont tow much, it also made me look at the Pyro gauge and probe. and I got all my great info from the past threads on how to install it and the many opinions of it all, ( pre-turbo post-turbo, how to install threads, take the turbo off or not for drilling, etc...) great stuff, so I may just do this for the mileage since fuel is going through the roof this summer. so does anybody have a better preference over the edge?

I get 12 city and 17 highway. I wouldn't have bought the truck if I didn't think I could get close to 20 I don't tow to much. The last couple tanks have been around 11-12 MPG.

I wonder what else you would have bought - certainly not a gasser.

I don't know what you're truck is, nor your driving habits; but driving habits are probably the biggest factor in fuel mileage issues. Heavy feet mean heavy fuel usage; lots of idling and no forward motion takes a hit on mileage; and numerous short city trips in cold weather where the engine isn't fully warmed also hinders good fuel mileage.

Yes... it's really AMAZING how much all of the above drastically effects my MPG. Were not talking just 1 or 2mph...... Driving style / conditons can easily drop the MPG on my truck 5mph or more.

My new '04.5, 600 got 16 mpg (hand calculated) on the first tank. Expecting it to only get better for the next few months.

BTW this motor has some big power!

I must have missed something about my Dodge Quad Cab 2wd SB CTD not being a real crew cab.

If it ain't a real crew cab, then What is It?

This truck has more room than anything I ever owned and the leg room in the rear is unbelievable. I like the fold flat cargo floor and the seat that folds up out of the way also. I could just about put a twin size mattress back there and have a sleeper.

Are you saying the your PSD is that much larger

No flame just wondering if yours is bigger than mine or if you have really looked over in my stall to see.

YES!!!!! my psd crew cab IS that much larger. I love the cummins motor and i like the dodge styling. But to me their crew cab is essentially an extended cab with better doors. If you truly compare the two you will see that the ford crew cab is substantially larger, the bed is also longer. The truck is larger. I sat in the back of the dodge and i just couldnt go for it. I wanted the cummins package, but i need a true crew cab. But i hear dodge has one in the works for 2005. I am really not looking to start a war here, but it is much larger. But getting back on the subject, how is your fuel economy?

Well, I haven't looked over the wall of the stall to see the back of your PSD but I find it hard to believe it's that much bigger than my '03 Ram.

The bed is small at 6 ft but that is one of the reasons I bought it. I wanted the Cowboy Limo to be for towing and going to the car races/shows with 5 or 6 adults comfortably, not bed size.
I believe it has much more room in the back than any car I ever owned. I know it has more room that the Crown Vic Patrol cars I drove over the years and I have stuffed some big'uns into it.

I am surprised that the Ford is larger to tell you the truth. But is it worth it? Is it needed?

I really am well pleased with the size and proportionment's of my truck. It is a great truck to me. I'm averaging 18.5 in all driving conditions.

We test drove an 04 PSD QC, and the back seat is that much larger. If we had to worry about hauling other people besides ourselves (wife and I) I would have seriously considered the PSD. We're both over 6' tall, and the Ford was really nice in the back. It was almost enough, but the Dodge just handled better and felt better to drive. Just an FYI: When I started shopping for a diesel truck, I went into it with an open mind and gave the Ford a real chance. Obviously, I still chose the Dodge.
