Thanks, I haven't had to do the filter yet, but I might cause in the last few days my mileage has dropped and might be losing power (or is it in my head?). I have bought diesel in alot of different places lately due to some trips. But I only have 6500 mi on the rig, so I don't know if it would be a waste of money...Probably do it anyway, cheap insurance-Steve

i don't think it would be a waste of money. what you describe is kind of what mine was doing. might have been in my head too.

 

t-7, how about priming the bowl on the 3rd gen. On the 2nd gen's, you had to bump the starter to get it to fill the bowl. Some people were just filling it with the fuel they took out when they bled the canister.

I just changed the filter on my truck at 6500 miles. But the filter has been in the truck for a year now. And it looked exactly like the on in the picture. Made a noticable improvement.

once the filter was installed, all i had to do was bump the key in the ignition once. usually it takes two times but the second time i did it cranked right up. once you bump the ignition, the fuel pump runs for about 20 seconds. the instructions that came with the filter says to soak the filter in the diesel fuel in the bowl. i don't really go with this part. how are you supposed to clean the sensors in the bowl if there is fuel in there? i guess you could pour some fresh diesel in it before installation of the filter. i just let the pump prime the filter.

it is not recommended by Cummins to fill the fuel filter bowl , but to install new filter and bump the starter , and lift pump will run for 25 seconds , I do it twice , make sure you bump the starter but not start the engine.

 

I must be lucky buying my fuel,because I've never seen my filter look black like that one. Mine just look wet,and not really dirty at all. I change them after every season of fuel change winter->summer and then summer->winter,or about 6000 miles. Now this was with my 2nd gen truck,mind you,I haven't done any fuel filter changes to my new truck,yet as it only has 3000 miles on it Mark.

 

Has any one filled the fuel bowl with a diesel additive instead of diesel? When I'd change the fuel filter on my stroke I'd fill the bowl with a PS additive, figured with those injectors any little bit would help them live a happy long life.

 

I recently had my '03 Ram 2500 in for the two recent recalls on the auto tranny so I thought I would have the dealer go ahead and change the fuel filter while they had the truck on the rack. The filter change did bring my mileage back up to normal (22mpg) but the cost to have them do the filter switch was just criminal especially after seeing how easy it is to change the filter yourself.

I carefully remove the housing with the diesel and filter still in it, then remove the filter,and pour the diesel into a clean Pyrex bowl. I clean the housing and put the fuel back in. It only takes on cycle of the LP to fill the housing.
