Front & Rear Diff fluid

I'm going to help my brother change the front & rear diff fluid in his 06 MC, and looking to find out what weight fluid goes in both, and if the rear is a limmited slip and needs an LS additive.

Thanks
Rich

75w90 in them both...you don't need any additives, and actually, it says in the manual NOT to use any. I think it's rougly 4.5qts in the rear and 3-3.5 in the front. I bought eight qts just to be on the safe side and I fill them just till they are about to overflow...

Just did mine this week, 4 ltrs in the back and a little under 3 in the front. Torque bolts to 20 ft/lbs and drain plug to 24. Disregard the 30 ft/lb torque from the manual, too many people have snapped bolts at 30. It is also best to have some loctite on hand for the bolts.

Agreed.

Also, the book says 75w-90 full synthetic that meets GL-5. I run 75W-140 on the advice of my dealer, since I tow in hot conditions.

And, although the manual does say no additive is needed, adding some often resolves chatter problems. I put some in the rear when I changed to 75w-90 front and 75w-140 rear at about 15K miles as a precautionary measure. I tow 11K over 75% of the time.

I ended up using the Royal Purple 75W90 in both front and rear with no additive and it has been working great. Bought 7 quarts and and a little left over to spare. I tow 12K #'s about 6 times a year.

Thanks for the help guy's I'm trying to get my 1st time diesel owner brother up to speed. Also how many QT's go in the T case. And just for my info are the rears in the Dodge's LS? if so why no additives like my Stroker. I know with out it my rear would clatter like all get out.

By the way I have been very impressed with my brothers Cummins. It being stock she will give my modded 7.3 all it could handle. It has me thinking I about a 5.9 when ever I replace my 7.3.

LS was an option, you may have it. Check the build sheet. Either way Dodge does not recommend an additive, it's in the manual.

Dodge's LS system works a bit differently, and as noted above the book says no additive, but there have been threads about people who had chattering while turning and LS additive helped...

Transfer case is Mopar ATF+4. Book says 4 pints, but mine takes just a bit more than that to get to the fill hole (a bit over 2 quarts).

My sons pickup has had a rear end chatter ever since we bought it...... (1/2 ton 2x4 with a 5.7L) Finally changed the dif. fluid about a month ago, filled it with synthetic and put some LS additive in it, chatter is GONE!.. Not sure which one fixed it, but its gone.

so we are supposed to use atf+4 in the transfer case, not gear oil?

Looks like Amsoil severe gear rated tops in this study. I use royal purple but will switch on the next change. http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g2457.pdf

Personally, I think the Mopar stuff is fine. You really don't hear about transfer case problems on these trucks.

The book says "Trac-Rite" limited slip axles do not require limited slip additive. "Trac-lock" axles, though (used in smaller vehicles) do require additive...
