front left 4x4 CLANK, not clunk.
I just had my ujoints, wheel bearings, balljoints and right side tie rod changed out. I was having a grinding/clunking noise when turning either direction, and in 4 wheel drive, a grinding noise when turning or when under stress.
after all was fixed, I tested it in 4WD, it drives great, EXCEPT for when I turn to the left, it has a CLANKING noise. In 2WD no noise at all in either direction. what else is there that could possibly need to be fixed after all that?!!

Mine did that, turned out it was the wiring harness to the Transfer case, it was destroyed. It wasent letting it shift into 4 wheel drive all the way. Just a thought might not be even close but worth a look..

thanks for both responses. I am doubtfull on both, but will definately look into them.
the thing is, I would assume if it was the tie rod, it would make noise when not in 4wheel drive. and if it was the wiring harness, seems like it would make the noise turning right as well. but as I said, I will look at both.
thanks again!

Just throwing stuff out, but maybe your pitman arm? I get a grinding noise when I'm not moving and try to turn the wheel, but that was after I put my lift on, so figured it was the extra stress from bigger tires.

thats why it went in at first. it was making a grinding clunking noise whenever I turned, or had it in 4wheel drive. now it just makes a clanking noise when its turning only to the left. I am gonna crawl under and see if anything is loose, but its going into the shop tomorrow, I am gonna make sure they fix anything they might have missed. hopefully at no cost. but doubtfull.

so I dug around under the truck and found that the drive line conntecting the front axle to the tranny (is it right to call that the front driveline?) has a completely BUSTED ujoint. I can push it with my finger and it will move in and out.
think that could be the noise?
now, I heard it is cheaper to buy a whole new driveline than it is to replace the ujoints, is that true? anyone have a part number?

Ian,
I bought a brand new front complete (all joints and double cardan) driveshaft from an online dodge vendor and it ran around $220 shipped to the door.
If it is a U joint in the cardan joint then I would replace the whole thing.
If it is the U joint that is located at the front axle then I would just replace the u joint.
For a couple a hundred bucks though you can have a whole new shaft with new joints and the newer style grease zerk for the cardan joint....

so here is a picture of where its broken (its out of focus, sorry), is that the cardan joint? or is it the one at the front of the driveshaft.
edit---
I just re-read your post, and it makes sense now. so I should probably just get a whole new shaft huh? they probably dont carry that at any local store huh?

Dodge dealer or online dodge dealer vendor will have the front driveshaft.
The U joint could probably be sourced locally however the Cardan joint might need to be changed and that is OEM only.

$178 on dodgeparts.com
