Front Hub Question

I have my truck at the dealer for some warranty work under my factory 7/100 plan. The service manager said the front hub needed to be replaced, but that it was not covered under warranty. My question is how can the front hub be bad but the wheel bearing be OK? Apparently the hubs are not covered, but everything else on the front axle is. I tried to call Chrysler for clarification, but they are closed through the weekend. Thanks for any help guys.

Good question. The bearing and hubs are one piece. Definitely get clarification from the SM. I'm wondering if they're just trying to squeeze a little money out of your wallet since they've been working on it for free up to this point.

In case you haven't seen, there's a good writeup on how to do the ball joints. It'll walk you through pulling that hub off. I think I've seen new hub units for $200-$300.

Nope,,, front wheel bearings are considered a wear item, kind of like brake pads and are not covered. Ball joints are covered. I know from personal experience with Dodge. The hub and the front wheel bearing is one unit. I have some good used ones now that I have dynatrac system.
Don't get me started on the worthless 100K/ 7yr warranty. Cracked dash not covered,, it's considered trim and trim is not covered. I guess the trans is also a "wear item".

Thanks for confirming my suspicion guys, that the hub and bearing are one piece...the service manager said on the phone today that the hub is not covered but the bearing is.

I hate to sound negative but get the feeling that the dealership is being less than honest with me. Les Schwab would not align my truck last week because they claim the ball joints are shot, but the according to the Chrysler service guy they are within spec. The leaky rear pinion seal is being replaced, but it will cost me $350 to have them pull the diff cover to investigate an intermittent howl at 20 mph that they cannot confirm...ahhh Chrysler warranty's....

Many places like to R&R ball joints due to high labor costs. Contact the Ca Auto Repair for info on ball joints as there is much a repair shop has to tell you, like wear measurements. Get a hypo needle that goes on a grease gun, auto zone, and fill the rubber boots. I did and I still have factory ball joints and no problems. A little up and down movement is OK just no side movement. You will know it if ball joints are bad with tire wear and noise but bad bearings might feel the same. If the bearings are bad you won't go far till you need a flat bed to take you home.

hubs arent covered, sucks but deal with it....its an easy half hour per side job. just sucks to have too lay out about $400 to do both sides, not very labor intensive if youve done it before. Did my 99's hubs once, now that sucked, the rotors are integral to the hub.
