Copied from Genos (description of the LF16035):
Fleetguard Oil Filter (Stratapore) This filter can be used on ALL '89 - '06 Turbo Diesel engines. The advantage of this filter is the fluted can which simplifies removal from underneath using the Six-In-One-Wrench (API-100-120) or the Lisle End Cap Filter Wrench.

Fleetguard - '89-'06 Stratapore Oil Filter for Turbo Diesel Engines

So, they are in-fact still Stratopore, IS the only difference the fluted end?
How can this number be good for 89-06 but the LF 3894 is only to be used for 98.5-02 ?
Yes fluted end.

Might have to do with clearance, trying to remove/install...

Im running the 3894 on my 05 as we speak, was a little more difficult to install/remove than my 12V, but not by much....(intercooler pipe/turbo being in the way trying to turn the filter wrench, but it wasnt a big deal, just had to inch it loose)

It is that much better of a filter then the original stratapore filter , I would not be caught with the other filter on mine , plus if you have warrantee , and you have a bottom end failure. dont have older one on the engine. even if you look up the cellulose filters they sell , you will find a different # in that also between 2nd gen and 3rd gen engine. Also it is no longer known as Fleetguard Filters, it is called Cummins Filtration and wholly owned by Cummins.
I kind of wonder if you ever did have a lower end failure, you would get a void warrantee. I don't think they could void it because you used a diff. brand and not there's. There is laws that tell the manufacture they can't tell you you have to use there brand of filters and oil.

Nope, heck most of the dealerships that friends of mine have had their oil changed at, used a pennzoil, or like filter....

As long as you keep records of your oil changes you should be just fine...

Rob, the LF3894 and the LF16035 is the same inside except the shell. The LF3894 is round on the end and the LF16035 is fluted on the end for easy removal

They are both stratapore filters, seems that the only difference is the fluted end.
Im running the 3894 on my '05 right now, running JUST fine and I guaruntee its a heck of alot better than the POS pennzoil that was on it...

Nothing like finally getting a reply from Cummins Filtration division about the difference two months later..... this is from tech specialist

John, the LF3894 and the LF16035 is the same filter except the shell on the LF3894 is round and the shell on the LF16035 is fluted.
Both of these filters have been designed for the Cummins ISB engines.

If you have other questions, please feel free to let me know.

Have a GOOD DAY!!

Again been getting bad info from the Engine Company So disregard my previous post about the filters.

Sure did, he had me worried I had three usesless filters out on my shelf. I will use these ones, then switch over the newer style.

A filter wrench is useless on these truck anyway, because you can't get it on the end of the canister or off once the filter's loose.

At least on my 2nd gen.

Save yourselves the hassle of debating the FG filters. Yes, the 3894 is great filter, and the 16035 is probably even better.

But the best spin-on you can get for our trucks is the Donaldson Endurance. In spite of the fact that Amsoil pushes them so heavily, it's an incredible filter.

You could probably go 20K with it.

Also, why on earth would you try to save money by buying a cheap filter?? I can see using dino oil to save money-- but buying a crappy filter?

I had NO problems getting out a filter in my '97, nor my '05, simple....
Filter wrench and all, not even a strap wrench. Slide it inbetween the intercooler hose/filter, slide it up around the filter, and spin till you can get it by hand. Easy.

I dont see the fleetguard being a cheap filter, im saying that the non-fluted is cheaper than the fluted end, that I dont need anyway...

Why would you go 20k miles without changing your oil?
I change mine every 3-3.5k, havent had a hiccup yet.
I dont see the point in spending more than $9 for the fleetguard filter that is doing just fine. Why spend $20-30 on a filter to extend changes, when a change costs less than $30 as it is...

Not like im running some crapppppy pennzoil, or fram filter....

I see your point. Oil changes for me are a little more than $20, so I extend to 7k-10k on a change.

I'd never advocate going 20K on a change. But the fact that the filter could do it says a lot about, don't you think?

Yeah, but if im not going to take advantage of the extended use, theres no point in paying more for a filter, when the fleetguard works just fine as proven by all those guys out there with 500k+ miles

I spend about $30 total on changing my oil every 3-3.5k, still much cheaper than the $50-55 I was spending on Mobil 1, filter, I was spending changing the oil in my Trans Am...

Obviously you want the best filter you can get for longevity, but on the other hand bang for the buck should be considered, still fleetguards have been performing fine for plenty of folks is my only point, no need to overspend.
