They may be a little different inside, thier probably a better filter. After all cummins raised the oil change time intervals. A better filter would help them do that.
I think if it was a total no no to use the old filters they would have made the mounting different so they wouldnt fit.
My opinion is they got it now so you cant get a wrench on like the old style,so they put the hex on the bottom so you can now use the end hex wrench to get them off easier. And that requires a new part #.
The old oil filters fit and will work fine, change them Q 5k and use them up. I'm useing them on my 06, no problem. Got 3 to go.

I walked into the cummins dealer on first oil change and told him what truck I had, out came the LF-16035 filters, now all I do is tell them company name and up it pops on computer. Crap, they are only about $9.00 each, what's all the gripping about. I change oil and filter every 3000-4000 miles, but hey, I only put 290 miles on it today, so that would be considered "in town" driving.

I just got off the phone with fleetguard tech and was told that they are the same filter except for the outside fluting and not only that but niether one have the venturi type inside filter. This is straight from cummins filtration, known before as fleetguard. 1-800- 22filter and ask for the tech dept if you would like to hear for yourself.

Here's how it works: First, the patented Venturi™ nozzle creates a low-pressure zone to help oil flow efficiently through the stacked-disc section. Then, the nozzle diffuser maximizes the flow through the pleated StrataPore™ media for minimum total-filter restriction.

It is that much better of a filter then the original stratapore filter , I would not be caught with the other filter on mine , plus if you have warrantee , and you have a bottom end failure. dont have older one on the engine. even if you look up the cellulose filters they sell , you will find a different # in that also between 2nd gen and 3rd gen engine. Also it is no longer known as Fleetguard Filters, it is called Cummins Filtration and wholly owned by Cummins.
Maybe I talked to the wrong person, but the tech person on the other end of the phone at cummins filtration told me that neither one of these two filters have the venturi style inside and are the same except for the fluting. Did you get your info from the same source? I must say that this is confusing me, if indeed cummins told you this because one would think that there is only one correct answer to this question.

He was talking about fuel filters being different. You can read in my other post what cummins told me about the lf3894 vs lf16035. If you get a chance call them some morning to see if you get the same info.

Umm, all Cummins 5.9's used in Dodge applications used FULL FLOW filtration...not bypass filtering

Unless you added a bypass filter to the engine via Amsoil or some other aftermarket supplier

I have 2 3894's left over from my old truck, we are getting two very different responses here, this thread died with no clear resolution.

Copied from Genos (description of the LF16035):
Fleetguard Oil Filter (Stratapore) This filter can be used on ALL '89 - '06 Turbo Diesel engines. The advantage of this filter is the fluted can which simplifies removal from underneath using the Six-In-One-Wrench (API-100-120) or the Lisle End Cap Filter Wrench.

Fleetguard - '89-'06 Stratapore Oil Filter for Turbo Diesel Engines

So, they are in-fact still Stratopore, IS the only difference the fluted end?
How can this number be good for 89-06 but the LF 3894 is only to be used for 98.5-02 ?

I think it is just because of the fluted end. on the 03's and up you have to get to the filter from underneath, on my 98 I could do it from above. So, marketing would maybe not say the non-fluted is recommended because if yo get under there and can't use a filter wrench. then you can't blame them. Just a thought
