You shouldnt be using the LF3894 on your 03 on up Common Rail engine , they are a not a Venturi Style oil Filter and will not perform up to specs. for the 03 on up engine, only use a LF16035 Stratopore Venturi type filter. they are both stratospere fitlers and they do work differently and the venturi does a better filtering. you can use the LF16035 on the older engine just dont use the older on the newer engines.

johnca58-that is news to me!! every post i have read on this site says the stratapore 3894 is the same as the stratapore 16035-except the 16035 has a fluted end and the 3894 is the rounded end. i guess i learned something new today!

when they say fluted , that means it is venturi style filter , they are a much better filtering filter , where the earlier has a bypass filtering and only filter a percentage of the oil thru the bottom plates , the fluted or venturi filter filters thru both sections of the stratopore filter media. there is a difference ,

cummins doesn't mention anything is diff except for the outside of case. I just called them and tech is gone for the day, but they told me to call back in the morning. I also have been using the 3894. This is also the first time that I have heard this.

If you talk to the right person , this is what he or she should say
Here's how it works: First, the patented Venturi™ nozzle creates a low-pressure zone to help oil flow efficiently through the stacked-disc section. Then, the nozzle diffuser maximizes the flow through the pleated StrataPore™ media for minimum total-filter restriction.
It is that much better of a filter then the original stratapore filter , I would not be caught with the other filter on mine , plus if you have warrantee , and you have a bottom end failure. dont have older one on the engine. even if you look up the cellulose filters they sell , you will find a different # in that also between 2nd gen and 3rd gen engine. Also it is no longer known as Fleetguard Filters, it is called Cummins Filtration and wholly owned by Cummins.

I have been useing a LF 3972 for allmost 17k now.It is the original filter that they upgraded to a stratapor with a different number. It just uses the paper media instead of the stratapor media,& it's cheaper.

according to fleetguard-the oil filters are the same. this is their email response to my question.
Rob, the LF3894 and the LF16035 is the same inside except the shell. The LF3894 is round on the end and the LF16035 is fluted on the end for easy removal
