First Tow With New Truck

First Tow With New Truck
I just couldn't stand it anymore and had to hook something to the back of my truck. I've had it for 2-Weeks yesterday and really haven't done anything with it yet. I spent yesterday cleaning it up and today there was nothing left to clean so I decided I'd get the boat out this afternoon ...it is the first day of Spring right? Its not THAT early to de-winterize.
I'm estimating my boat/trailer to weigh about 7000lbs...maybe a little more. My old Dodge 1500 5.9 Gasser pulled it ok, but strained just a little under accel. and a little more pulling uphill (it had intake and exhaust mods). The diesel was quite an experience. The torque at idle speed was really nice....I could pull slowly out of the boat-house while keeping my foot over the brake pedal and never even touching the gas....once out on the road, I could barely feel anything behind me! .....and while cruising at 50mph, I was getting 17mpg! My 5.9 Gas used to get 8-10 at Best, with the boat in tow.... There are some new photos in my gallery of the truck with the boat.
Oh...and how long do you guys typically let your truck idle/cool down after towing a med-light load like this for about 30 miles....fairly flat. I don't have guages yet, so I'm just guessing at the time I should let it cool.
thanks,
-daniel

Hate to say it man but I THINK you way over estimate the weight of your boat. I think your closer to 5,000lbs maybe even less.
That is unless you got a ton of trotline weights in there.
Either way still a great test!

Well, you're almost correct The boat itself weighs in at 5000lb. The trailer is another 1830lb, plus 26 gallons of gas, a 600watt stereo system with large sub-boxes, (about 40lbs each), lots of wakeboarding equipment, including a stainless 7ft pole (50lb). and other misc. gear like extra car batteries, pumps, spare prop (25lb), etc.... So, that adds up to almost 7200lbs on my calculator. I would like to get it weighed though, just to have an exact #. I know the boat and trailer weights are correct because of the stamped weights on there, but I'm curious what it weighs with all the gear/fuel aboard. Have you ever gotten personal equipment like this weighed somewhere?
SuperGewl; you're right....I can't read. If only there were pictures in the manual. I actually have read the manual. I thought the guidelines in the book were very general and maybe I'd find more specific from the knowledgable people here.

That does seem a bit much weight for that boat, we tow ours which is right around 5400lbs and it towed great with dad's 99, I can't even imagine what it would have towed home like if I was towing it. Wow I told him the other day I could just hook up to the front of his truck and pull him and the boat, he he. We have a fun time though working on the same things on our trucks. Here's a link to the boat we tow.

Nice boat...not really my style, but I love all boats! Is that an outboard? Can't see the back. Where do you go with it, do you live on water or do you tow to it? Guys...I promise, my boat has a sticker in it that confirms the weight of 5000lb and the trailer has a stamp that confirms its weight of 1830lb. I can post photos of them I know because I built my own boat house/boat hoist....so, I had to be sure that it could lift the full 5000lb. You've got to remember that this boat has a 351 sitting in the middle of it. Its made to be a heavy inboard tow-boat which is why it throws a nice wake for wakeboarding.

You can go to the CAT scales at a truck stop. I think they have a web site locater. I weighed my old 1/2 truck there last year. I really had to jump to reach the call button. Its made to reach out of the window of a semi. I told them personal vehicle and they weighed the truck on the scales. Then you go inside and pay about $8 and they give you a weigh receipt. Havent weighed this truck yet, but Im going to.

We mostly use that boat for off shore fishing. It's a 350 chevy inboard outboard with a Alpha 2 outdrive. Were looking at putting in a 454 Mercruser to get the speed up a bit, and a better outdrive. It will run 35-45mph on the water and in 3 foot sea's just cruses like your on a lake, it's great. Haven't really caught any big fish yet but are looking into some tuna this summer. Love having the radar on board and all that, it's great. I love being out on the water. If I'm not on the water i better be in my CTD

Yeah, I hear ya. If I'm not behind the boat on one of my boards, I'd better be in the boat or in my truck! To get your speed up, you might just try changing props. A different pitch might get your top end speed a little faster, at the cost of hole shot. I run a 4-blade SS prop on mine that causes my boat to top out at 40mph, but it'll pull 10 skiers. I wakeboard at 22mph, so I'm happy as long as I've got a strong hole shot and steady 22.

DGM, I stand corrected, I guess they don't make them like they used too. How long is your boat? 21-22 or so? Maybe it's a lot bigger than it looks in those photos. Most of your inboard ski boats in the 23-24 foot range are around 4000lb empty. 1800lbs for little tandem boat trailer like that is pretty suprising as well. I would guess 500-600lbs less. I still have my doubts about them weight stickers, I think they might be fibbing to you!
Tas, that is a sweet Grady White!

Brad, very nice nautique! Back then, I do believe Supremes & Nautiques were made together. I ride with a friend who has the supreme version of your boat. Mine is just a little longer with a deeper V in the front.... it throws a pretty descent wake unweighted. His needs some weight to get the wake up, but its a real nice shape.

Tas, thats a nice old Grady, love the wide beam. I cant remember seeing an I/O down here in Florida, mostly out boards. Speaking of outboards heres a funny commercial about the new Evenrudes, http://home.comcast.net/~xcusme/2070.wmv
