Well, the time is here. It's time for the first oil change since buying my lightly used 2006 5.9L CTD with 43,800 miles on the clock. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions other than "read the owner's manual." What is the best oil to run in it or brands of filters? Are there other services I should tackle while I'm doing the oil change? Thanks, Shima

 

Everyone has their own preference when it comes to the oil they use in their trucks. I personally use Rotella 15w40, and Fleetguard oil filter (P# LF3894 or LF 6035 one). I change my fuel filter every other oil change.

A word of advise if you're doing it in the driveway..... Lay a huge sheet of plastic down under the truck before you start. It keeps the driveway clean and the wife off your back ...

 

Yea, I lay a piece of poly under the truck when I change it. Be prepared for the 3 gallons of oil that will come out of it. I like to run Valvoline Premium Blue with Fleetguard Filters(P/N LF16035). Are you thinking about running synthetic oil?

I use Fleetguard oil/fuel filters. I change my fuel filter every 12k miles and my oil filter ever 5k (On 10k mile oil change interval).

You might want to pick one of these up, makes the job a little easier.

As was said before--be prepared for 3 gallons of oil to come out. It won't fit in a normal drain pan. And its a lot harder to put an oil plug in when oil is running out than it is to take the plug out. Don't ask how I found out.

Thanks guys. Noted, I'll locate something to catch 3 gallons of oil and put plastic under the truck. I'll look for Fleetguard filters and Rotella. I'll probably do the fuel filter change also.

 

I've been using rotella 15 40 since the truck was new with dodge filters... no problems thus far.

Check out blackstone labs if you want to see whats going on in the engine... I just did an oil sample, and am very happy with their customer service.

 

I change the oil filter from below (some change it from above by removing the turbo hose, or from the wheel well by removing the liner). Loosen the filter just enough so you can turn it by hand, and then work a gallon zip lock bag up around the filter to catch any oil that spills.

I do the change in two steps - first drain off the old oil while the engine is hot so it drains out good. Then I let it sit and cool a few hours before changing the filter since it's by the exhaust manifold, etc. You can change the filter hot if you have to - but it's an easier job if you can let it cool.

 

You'll need an 1 1/8" socket or a crescent wrench for the fuel filter, fyi.

 

Chervon DELO LE 15w-40 with Fleetguard 16035 // Fuel change baldwin PF7977 and the Fram Sure Drain every 5K. All changes are 20 minutes tops.

 

Anybody have a Fleetguard P/N for the fuel filter?

Here is the fuel filter info:
FLEETGUARD Part # FS19856 Premium Fuel Filter (7 micron) - DODGE ('03-'07, 5.9L)

 

A better fuel filter is the Baldwin PF7977 ( 5 micron ) and I can buy it locally cheaper then I can get a Fleetguard from Geno's.

 

No need for plastic on the driveway (except maybe under the oil filter), a 5 gallon bucket fits perfectly under the oil pan on a 4x4. No mess, no spill, as long as there isn't a hole in the bucket.

Oh, and:

1. Don't forget to re-fill your oil filter with about 1 qt. of fresh oil before installation.
2. Make sure the o-ring from the old filter isn't stuck to the engine block.

 

I like Valvoline premium blue. Have nothing but good reports from Blackstone lab on the oil test.the oil holds up rill good
