Filterminder on S&B

Bought a new S&B airbox and noticed that it didnt come with the filterminder. Didnt think it was a big deal at first but its got me wondering. Anyone know if you can put in an aftermarket?

I wondered the same thing, their website said not to use it. I forget the reason why.

It has a clear lid you can tell when the filter's dirty, why would you need the filter minder working?

Because you can't see air flow, and there's alot more things that affect air flow than just a dirty filter.

I suppose the main reason they don't like the Filterminder idea is because in most cases it would clearly demonstrate the fact that you just wasted alot of money on their product.

You'll get less airflow when the filter's dirty, you don't need a little plastic gizmo to tell you that when you can see it with your eyes!

Ya think?
So what's going to tell you about the airflow when the filter's clean? Or not "visually" clogged? Or when a possum got stuck in the intake?

Well, I guess the smell would lead you to it, if you didn't notice something wrong after a couple days...

Unless you can monitor your little plastic gizzmo from inside your cab I think you'd find the possum next time you opened your hood trying to figure out where the smell's coming from!

Of course the dead possum might be the reason for your low boost too maybe?

(I don't thing the filter minders are very reliable anyhow though.)

filter minders aren't accurate any way just check the filter every now and then.

Actually they are better than just changing the filter whenever it looks dirty. It will show you when there is a restriction in the air filter setup, and yes they do make in cab versions of them.

Air filters actually work better when they have dirt on them, then when they are new, so changing your filter often is actually hurting your engine more in the long run because the new filter only filters 97-99% of the dirt out. Air filters have low restriction for most of their service life, but filter restriction increases rapidly towards the end, which is probably why most people do not think filter minders work.

Was wondering when you were gonna get tired of the comments. I was thinking the same thing. You might want to leave out the last word though, but very true. Hard to get a decent answer from some people. These forums are for HELPFULL info and thats why we use them, but some like to throw out their useless comments. I hear ya brotha.

Kept it going long enough to get useful information, didn't it? I was starting to wonder if anyone who actually knew what they were talking about was going to chime in. Maybe we should have just left it at change when dirty and filter minders are no good?

maybe mine is bad but with a 6inch amsoil or k&n filter either one brand new when they flow the most air with my 66 i can still pull it shut like the filter is stopped up. that is where i got info from. mine may be wore out.

No kiddin? I'm not surprised. I have the same problem with my 1st Gen, well not that bad, but same issue. When you are talking about mods like that, then the air flow requirement is going to go up quite a bit. Depending on how much HP you are making you might be pulling a good vacuum behind the filter with a high-flow filter and unrestricted aftermarket airbox.

In that case, I just reset it once in awhile and note where it runs after a mild trip to the grocery store with no heavy throttle. Doesn't even move. But once I get a run with more than about 20psi it starts pulling down. 30 psi pulls it half way down. The K&N only pulls it down about a quarter of the way at 30psi.

Lots of variables to consider. The key is to just understand what it's doing and why.
