Filter Mag
Has anyone tried a product called "Filter Mag" it attaches around the out side of the oil filter. I saw it in a magazine while waiting for my wife to get her nails done. Is this product for real or just a marketing ploy...

Think about this. You have a mag plug in your diff. It collects metel all the time.
Your filter will collect most particles but not all. A mag plug will just aid in the collection of metallic particles.
What is the benifit from it over all. Not sure. Most likely it will help to filter out the finer metal particles in the engine oil.
If you want to Do this for us so we know. Get an oil sample done before installing the magnet also send in your oil filter to get it checked. Then install the magnet on the filter and run your normal drain time. Then send in another sample see what the difference is in metal counts.
It would be interesting to see. Other then that you cant go wrong with the product I figure. Just one more piece of protection.

I have had a filter Mag for a few years. It was VERY pricey too. They said it was because they had to use strong magnets because the Cummins oil pump flows allot of oil (16 GPM). One of the reasons it's marketed to catch the metals that will cut through the filtering media. The Filter Mag is STRONG. They said our model will lift a small refridgerator and has about 1500-2000 lbs of draw. You can't pull it off of the filter. It has to be slid off and even thats not easy. When you installl it on a newly installed oil filter, make sure no fingers are in the way. It makes a healthy "snap" to the filter that I'll bet could be heard a block away. I have never cut open a filter to check to see what its caught. It is VERY well constructed and still looks like the day I bought it. This is not a cheaply made magnet.
I love my Filter Mag and will continue to use it.

Perspective buyers are lucky. It looks like they have come WAY down in price. I paid a hundred and a half for mine. They had 10% for TDR members at the time. I have p/n HD-365. That may be an old p/n.

How about a magnetic drain plug in the bottom of the oil pan? That way you can see the plug every time you change the oil.
http://www.magneticdrainplug.com/ has them for about $8
