Question Filter Cap Swap?

WILL A 2ND GEN CTD FUEL FILTER CAP FIT ON A 03 CUMMINS? THIS WOULD MAKE THE FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE SENDER PROBLEM SOO MUCH EASYIER.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

Dodgezilla, do you have your fuel pressure sending unit screwed directly onto the filter cap or did you have to use a snubber hose? I'm referring to a guage w/ an electric sending unit? Thanks in advance.

I was wondering the same thing, since the CP3 banjo bolt is too close to the Jacobs vaccum punp to add a pressure sending unit.

However, after looking at the filter lid, it appears that a tap there will be on the inlet side of the filter and thus not measure the pressure drop through the filter. I decided to remove the banjo bolt at the bottom of the filter housing on the line going to the CP3. It appears very similar to the banjo bolt on the CP3 inlet. I replaced the bolt on the bottom of the filter housing with the tapped bolt from the Quadzilla Commander fuel pressure kit and hung the sending unit upside down.

It seems to work fine and there is OK clearance to the motor mount just in front of the sending unit. I read 3-7 PSI after the filter (stock '06 in-tank lift pump). The pressure varies, but does not appear to drop on WOT or high loads.

Hope this helps someone else put a fuel pressure sending unit on thier truck.

My sending unit is mounted directly to the filter cap. No isolator. It has worked fine for about a year.

Why not just drill and tap your existing cap?

Because it's just cheesy plastic. I guess you could do that though. I just wanted to be able to put the plastic cap back on just like when it was stock in case I ever needed to.... The billet cap is nice and shiny even though you can hardly see it back there.....

So all you guys are getting your fuel pressure readings from the fuel filter housing? What is expected pressures at WOT and cruising?

Is the ISSPRO fuel pressure kit bolt right up to the cap from Geno's?

I'm curious. Why would you bother with the filter cap, which is on the inlet side of the filter, when you can just use the banjo bolt at the bottom?

You also get the benefit of seeing the filter's restriction, if any to the fuel flow.

As to expected pressures, I see 3-7psi on a Qualzilla Commander. After a few days of observation, it appears that 7psi is the usual pressure, with excursions to 4-5 psi at very high loads/WOT.

And you tapped into the banjo bolt for your psi reading? Is their a psi difference between the bolt and the cap?

I did it that way because it was easy. My truck makes just shy of 12psi at idle, just over 10psi while cruising, and around 7-8psi while getting on it hard. I have been told that compared to other new trucks my reading is off by about 2psi (too high) or I just got a good LP...

I also change my fuel filter every second oil change so I'm not too worried about being able to read the filter restriction.

Thanks Dzilla I appreciate the info.

Would you happen to know if the Bully Dog Outlook monitor for the tripple dog has a fuel pressure reading? If not i'll have to run a mechanical gauge ontop of my seteering colum.

Dodgezilla,

So you are tapped into the cap (pre-filter) and seeing 10-12 psi at idle. In my 06, I'm seeing 7 psi post filter bottom banjo bolt). So either there is a 5 psi drop through the filter (not likely IMHO - new filter) or your pump is much better.

Does anyone have flow/pressure curves for the stock lift pumps? I cannot find a spec for the pressure in the factory sevice manual. Perhaps I should take mine to the dealer and ask them to change the pump.
