Fan Clutch Question

Something is up with my fan clutch, it only turns slowly, I can stop it at an idle. It always spins the same speed no matter how hot it gets or if the ac is on or off. I have looked at the other posts and still have no idea. #17 fuse for fan is good. AC is ice cold after I start driving. If I first start it up, the ac cycles like crazy for a good five minutes then it will be cold. AC high side pressures have been over 350, so the high side cut out is working. My wires to the fan are good, plug is good, no corrosion, or bent pins. No codes at all.....I'm at a loss. Don't feel like replacing a 240 clutch for no reason. I know a bunch of you will say go with the flex a lite fan, but thats not an option....short on money. Anyone have any ideas??

I have 12 volts on pin 5, and 5 volts on pin 6 with key on or running. Fan still just turns, does not engage

I did another test I found on another site- I probed the orange with brown wire and connected the other end to ground. I now got a check engine light, with P0107, P0642, P1749, P1754. Still no fan operation. Cleared codes, still no fan operation

fan

not sure about your truck, but on my truck, the fan hardly ever runs. It just free wheels mostly. When it does run, I can hear it. It would be easy to miss, but if you really pay attention, its not hard to hear.

Kinda sounds like a semi truck when they are poking around or turning around, and their motors are getting hot because there is little air moving over the radiator and intercooler.

Only really ever comes on when I am pulling the camper. As far as I can tell, most days the fan doesn't engage at all. Not sure if that has anything to do with your A/C working or not working but my .02.

Turn on your a/c and cover the condenser with a blanket of some sort. If your clutch is working it should engage and really ROAR trying to pull air through the front-end. If it doesn't engage pretty good chance it's bad. I've had two of mine replaced and that's how I checked them.

First, Welcome to the Forum.

Spooler had a thread up a long time ago about the A/C. The problem is as you stated no fan or not enough air blowing across the condenser to keep the A/C unit from going high in temp and shuting down the compressor. The Orifice tube was also called out as being to small. His solution was to mount a fan on the front of the cooling grid which comes on when you start the truck. He also hooked it up as an aux for tranny cooling if I remember right.

The link starts on page 2 so go back to page one.

Make sure the connector is tight that comes from the fan clutch. Follow the wire. I put a tie wrap around mine.

Don't know what year your truck is so most of this applies to 03 and later.

I have the exact same problem with mine right now

My fan clutch can be stopped at idle by my hand, my truck has overheated today for the first time ever, i also get a P0217, coolant temperature too high, WELL GO FIGURE DAMMIT!!

I just replaced the FC, and still get the P0480, and P0483 codes on this truck, i am already fed up with it to no end..

FWIW i get these codes on the **** things as is... and yes i am very very very mad at this thing right now, Im even considering a duramax or a ford as we speak..

P0217 coolant temperature too high
P0480 cooling fan 1 control circuit open (low speed fan relay)
P0483 cooling fan speed
P0541 Intake heater relay 1 low
P1749 TTVA position sensor circuit low
P1754 TTVA actuator stuck

if its not one thing with these common rails its a whole other, I started working on the truck over three weeks ago trying to fix the APPS sensor issues (P2121 and P 2122) and had the P0483 code already, and P0541,

Now i have already cleared the APPS sensor codes, by replacing the fan clutch, so it seems, but the codes for the fan clutch still dont disappear, i got a P0480 now and the P1749 and P1754 codes as well...

i am at wits end with this truck already.. my experience tells me that selling my 12V has been the worst mistake i have ever made in regards to diesels so far... and i regret it daily and more now...
