Fan clutch, engine, trans hot

Anyone know if these fan clutches will fail without setting any DTC's. My engine and trans temps have been steadily going up this summer to the point that now I cant tow anything unless I'm going 65+ and event then it runs hotter than it should, 205+ cruising up over 220 on hills. I have a fan clutch but hate to change it if that's not the problem. I've never heard the fan kick in fully on this truck like I think it should.

Same problems here. A/C started to blow warm, and it would heat up going up grade unloaded. Never much just higher then normal.

Anyways took it to an A/C shop they said fan clutch, I just replaced in this morning with a new one, 437.00 from dodge dammit, anyways, the air seems to blow cold, I know I need to get the system recharged but it's still heating up and I havent heard my fan click on or pick up speed either.

Checked the fuse its fine, I'm wondering the A/C shop also wanted to do a flush on the coolant so maybe I'm due for new thermostats and a flush??

It never has had a code come up, I looked at the old one and it did look like a bit of fluid had come out and dried around the front hub of the fan clutch and it spun way easiler then the new one did so I guess it was worn.

Some time ago there were several post that talked to grounding the negitive
wire on the connection with the engine at normal operating temp. Suppositly
if you turned the A/C on at that time with the grounded wire, the fan would engage. It would also produce a DTC Code 0480.

I copied all the threads that related to it that were of importance. I don't know if it would be proper to repost them. Its about a page and 1/2 or word.

The other thing that was mentioned was at times the wire from the connector get loose as it goes to the fan. If that happens the fan will break
the wires.

Do a search, you should find it. If not PM with your e-mail address and I'll send them to you.

Forgot to mention, when I'm towing stop light to stop light, the tranny temp goes up above 220 as well as the Engine water temp. I never here the fan.
Thats why I was interested in the threads. I really thought about putting a switch in, but have not done it yet. I'm going to ask Dodge if the temp setting in the computer can be adjusted somehow to come on at a lower temp.

I havent checked the connector yet but mine has been a gradual change, not all at once. I take it that these trucks never set the DTC as they should, an unplugged connector should set a code immediately. I have seen a problem once on a larger Cummins ktta19 engine where the impeller on the water pump started slipping and caused the engine to overheat, other times waterpumps with plastic impellers would have broken vanes on them. Not common but strange things do happen. Dodge should have went with a clutch fan instead of a vicsous fan clutch, much fewer problems that way.

Mine did the same thing this summer, service adviser said it might be a faulty coolant temp sensor, as that is what sends the signal to the fan clutch.

5.9L DIESEL (ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED FAN DRIVE)
The Engine Control Module (ECM) controls the level
of engagement of the electronically controlled viscous
fan clutch by monitoring coolant temperature, intake
manifold temperature, air conditioning pressure and
transmission oil temperature. Based on cooling
requirements, the ECM sends a signal to the viscous
fan clutch to increase or decrease the fan speed.
Fan speed is monitored by the ECM. Fan speeds
above or below a calibrated threshold will set a DTC.
Circuit concerns will also set fan clutch DTC’s.
