Exhaust brake vacuum pump

73500 mi. and vac pump started to rattle and had no vacuum. Called my dodge dealer and after he researched it said not covered under extended warranty through Chrysler, 5 yr./100k.
Said the pump was $900.00. I said to much. I told him that I had just went to Cummins and It cost $215.00 + tax. He said He didn't believe it. I said good bye. went to Cummins to get pump and there on the counter were coupons for 10% off on parts and labor good through 12-31-2010.
At the Denver/Henderson location only.
Out the door 203.27. Called brother-in-law and two hrs. back on the road. works like a top. I did install a hose clamp on the hose at the pump and tie wrapped all other hose connections. Here is a link from Cummings for Jake Brake Install instructions.

sorry I don't know how to post a link. One thing I remember reading in the instructions was to not run the pump with out the hoses hooked up or it will ruin the diaphragm.

Yep, same thing happened to me this past Labor Day. Vac pump went out while up North. Got home, removed the serpentine belt, and installed original belt to bypass the vac pump. Next day went shopping for new vac pump, Dodge dealership wanted $1046 for a new one. Cummins shop two blocks away from dealership wanted $215. Not hard to make that decision! Maybe that's why we call them "stealerships".

Some one needs to come up with a magnetic clutch similar to what is on a A/C unit for the vacuum pump so its not in use unless you need it.

I had a jake on my last truck which was a 2000 3500. The vacuum pump behind the power steering pump never failed with 203,000 miles on it when I sold the truck.

I need to install one on my current truck, but I think they not that reliable and not worth the money. Thats almost the same can used on the 5.7 and 6.2 GM diesels back in the 80's and 90's.

From what I found in my searches relating to failed vacuum pumps, the ones off the GM's are around $120 from autozone. The vac hose connection is at a different angle and you have to reuse your pulley.
