Engine troubles......

I have a 2004 ( built date Jan. 2004) CTD and I am having problems with my motor!....I have 15,000 miles on it and I just bought the truck about 14 thousand and some change on it the truck started sputtering white smoke so I checked the fuel filter and it was black so i changed it so now it has a new filter in it and it is still running choppy.

I dont want to have to take it to my dealer due to the slow process....anyone with this problem? The truck has the silencer removed and the baffles in the intake tube removed as well as the muffler gone. Any suggestions?

Recheck the fuel filter. You may well have gotten a bad batch of fuel. Make sure you didn't gas the truck instead of fueling it... (I heavily suspect this to be your problem.)

If all else checks out, then I'd have a quick look at the air filter and all the intake connections. The fact that you modified your intake tells me that it's been apart.

It's possible that a fuel intake line has developed an air leak. That, or the filter housing may be leaking some air. Lift pump is of some concern, but I doubt it right now.

One last thought is a pressure-limiting valve within your common-rail system that's stuck open for some unknown reason. Too little pressure being delivered to the injectors.

Perhaps you might have a look at your fault codes and share them with us???

I'm still betting that the truck was gassed from your brief description. You'll get clouds of white smoke, rough-running, and very poor power when diesel is contaminated by significant gasoline. Past a certain point you'll be lucky the engine will turn over under its own power.

Well It very well could have been gassed while at the dealership but certainly not by me.

I don't think so though because it ran fine when i test drove it and the problem is not all the time.....It runs fine and then it will start acting up.

What if i disconnect the battery cables? Will that reset my computer? Maybe start running better?

It just sucks for me that i went from having a 98 chevy diesel that was having problems all the time to having a new one that is already having problems! great!

I have checked my air filter and it is good....there shouldn't be a leak anywhere due to the pain in the butt it is to put the lid back on the airbox to snap it on.

As far as me modding the air intake everything is on right and tight.

When the engine is running I can stand there and listen and I can hear something that sounds like air leaking through a air hose.

Fault codes? How do I check those?

GotBoost - cycle your key on three times - Codes will come up where your odometer numbers are - then do a search on here for OBII codes so you know what the numbers mean. Good Luck.

It sounds like we may have the same problem. My truck is in the shop, right now, for this problem. It was in the shop in Dec. for the same problem. Dealership says "no code - no problem". I've been stranded 3 times. The problems eventually clear up, with nothing being done. Then you wait for the next go-around. Very frustrating. Does anyone remember when mechanics actually had troubleshooting abilities.............without the aid of a computer?

The problem has cleared up a litte but every now and then if i am taking off from a light a will feel the truck shutter and will see a faint hint of white smoke then it clears up.

Or if i am getting onto an on ramp I will feel it under heavy accleration than it clears up.

I put a new fuel filter in it this morning and got a potent diesel supplement and i am fixing to go on a 100 mile round trip so maybe this will help! I hope!

I don't want to take it to the dealership due to their incompotence on EVERYTHING!
These guys like to hand tighten your drain plug and not even put your filler cap back on and charge you 50 bucks for an oil change to only let you take it home and give you 12 quarts back in the middle of your driveway!

I am going to drive 30 miles to the next dodge dealership from now on!

ROFLMAO,

I let a dealer do a oil change for me once, got it home and checked workmanship. Pan plug loose, fill cap missing, dipstick left laying on fender well. Do they honestly think that you would let them tackle something like brakes or steering when they can't even get a simple oil change right?

I couldn't beleive what I saw when I walked outside and seen my drive way!
This has never happened to me! My truck is still running rough and so I called every dealership within 50 miles and they were all busy till next week except guess who???

Thats right....the local dealer so I told them that I wanted a "diesel" tech. to look at it in the morning BUT i want to be standing right beside him the whole time to make sure nothing goes wrong. Or something doesn't forget to be put back on!

Well see what happens! If all else fails I am going to be in Houston on monday and i will try there.

The SIMPLE oil change is usually done by the SIMPLE employee.Thats the problem. Its GRUNT work.I went through lots of LUBE MEN(simple) because it slows down the MAIN techs to much to pull them off jobs for oil changes unless they already had it for something else and already lifted. Its been a age old problem after dealers started pretending to be a QUICK LUBE.Had a SIMPLE lube guy once that was GREAT.He really could'nt do much else and took great pride in what he could do.Could'nt replace a brake pad but he sure could do oil changes, wiper blades etc.Had him 8 years.Wiped down the oil caps, air filter housings, really cleaned a zerk fitting etc.Worth his weight in gold and LIKED his job.Had lots of lube men and HE"S the only one I really remember.Heck if he had time he'd remove all the depris from cowlings(leaves/pinstraw etc)Lubed door hinges, locks with out being told or asked.Rare employee.

The "Black" fuel filter is actually normal and doesn't mean anything. The white smoke and rough running makes me think it's a bad injector. Do a search on "Injectors" and you may find others with your same symptoms....
