Engine Tap / Tick 1200 rpm's and higher

Hi all!
I'm new to owning a diesel, I just purchased the truck in October and I have about 1500 miles on it. I have a tapping noise that begins around 1200 rpm's and continues the highing you go with the rpm's and the tapping increases. The tap sound like a gasser with a valve stuff. Is this sound normal for the cummins? Forgive me if this is a stupid question but I am new to the diesel world. Thanks in advance! ;D

More than likely it's just the sound of the diesel compared to the gas job you used to drive.....they do make noise.

Ive started A topic like this in the past and was gonna start one again tonight but figured i'd add tp this one. Now that it is cold out the tick noise is very prevelant it almost sound like a bad lifter or improperly adjusted valve. it very loud on start up and quiets down after a few minutes. an ideas the truck only has 4000 miles

Could be a mis-adjusted valve, but Cummins doesn't call for valve adjustment until 100k or so, if I remember correctly.

No harm in taking the valve cover off and trying your hand at it, if not, maybe worth a trip to the dealer (bad word) :.

Or, let it be, a slightly larger gap is better than smaller. Less clearance can cause a burnt valve.

Could even be an injector, try a fuel additive just for the heck of it, something like Stanadyne.

Mine also made a noticeable ticking sound after several thousand miles, which was worse when cold and usually went away when warmed up. Either normal break-in or some combination of fresh Delvac 1300, Stanadyne, and a new fuel filter at 11k miles seems to have fixed it. The filter was dark gray, and was changed because it didn't seem to accelerate as well as it use to on the freeway. I still hear some light ticking when it's cold, which I'm guessing are valves, and I'll check those when I get some time.
