Engine swap issue

Have a buddy with an 06 4x4 6 speed. Blew the engine so he went and bought an engine that came out of an 04 auto. After getting everything put back together the tranny wont engage. Loosen the bolts a half a turn on the tranny and it will engage. Should he get some type of adapter kit or something so the 04 engine will fit onto the 06 tranny.

We would appreciate any help

Thanks

What do you mean by not engage? Did you try starting engine with trans in gear ? If you did that can you then get any gears? Possible input shaft binding on pilot bearing.

Well you put it in gear let out the clutch and nothing happens. Seems as if the shaft isnt long enough or something

Not sure but just a thought.

Years ago when I changed a 318 Plymouth engine I had a similar problem but with an auto trans, it was the flywheel bushing. That particular year Plymouth used 6 different size bushings. Simple to change though. I would check with a Dodge parts department and see if there were any different crankshaft bushings for that application.

Just my thoughts though, nothing I'm sure of.

Engine with auto trans doesn't have a pilot bearing installed on crankshaft. So I hope you installed one into crankshaft. Also make sure the transfercase isn't in neutral gear?

If you have electric NV273 or manual shift NV271 they both have neutral gear selection.
