Engine Shut Down Chirp

Why is it that some 3rd gens have the chirp and some don't? My truck has never done it but in the past few days I've personally witnessed three different ones that did.

I understand that it's normal, but why do some trucks do it and others don't? Mine has NEVER done it....but lately I've seen several others that have.

Hmmmm.....I wouldn't think the transmission would have anything to do with it but maybe that's the key??

My chirps. The better it's running the louder it chirps. It's music to my ears

I belive the gatorback belts eliminate it.

I am pretty sure it is because we have automatics and you don't....I will check in the book because it says what it is but I haven't had the chance to look it up..

The big heavy clutch and flywheel on a manual make the crank stop more gently than the lighter flexplate and torque converter on the automatic.

When you shut down our engines there is so much compression, that the crank pulley stops turning before the rest of the pulleys, (kind of like locking up your brakes and the tires skidding) causing the serpentine belt to slip on the pulleys and make a chirp noise.

thanks for the explanation... I had no idea what caused the chirp, and passengers often ask "what was that?"..now I know what to tell 'em
my automatic does it maybe 60% of the time.

almost EVERY time i stop the engine. i really thought something was wrong with it. glad i belong to a place that you can get some good quality information
my 03 was a 6 speed and never did it but this one is an auto so that must be the cause.

You may NOT want to use anything like that on there. It can lead to other problems such as the belt slipping off, or causing the belt to deteriorate. Just my penny worth of advise.
